Chapter Ten

“Skye,” The voice whispered in my ear for the tenth time in my ear, flicking my hands backwards I felt it come in contact with something. That something let out a whispered curse and poked me in the arm, “Wake up Skye!”

Blinking the sleep away from my eyes I opened them slowly to see Ace, his hair sticking up in twenty direction and his green eyes were sparkling with affection.

“You look like crap in the mornings.” Ace told me, running his hands through my nest like hair. Glaring up at him through heavy eyelids was a hard job but I did it, but he didn’t seem affected by it at all.

“Well you sure know how to make a girl feel wonderful about herself,” I grumbled and rolled onto my tummy, pushing my face into his pillow and took a deep breath in.

“I’ll see you at school,” He gave me a short yet sweet kiss before he climbed out of my window, I heard his feet shuffling against the side of my house before he landed on the balls of his feet.

Getting ready in the matter of fifteen minutes I rushed downstairs after Emma wouldn’t lay off the beeping so she was basically waking up the whole neighbourhood and I’m pretty sure the old lady across the street was throwing me the finger as I stumbled out of my front door.

“I live here!” I hissed, getting into her car, “I could get killed in my sleep!” As much as I loved my best friend I really wanted to slap her with a chair sometimes. Emma shrugged her shoulders and started driving to school.

We spoke casually about the homework we had gotten during the weekend, her and Elliot’s relationship and of course, mine and Ace’s. She parked the car and got out, Elliot stood waiting for her and he drew her into a hug before he turned and smiled at me.

“Hey Skye,” He came and hugged me, squeezing me before letting me go.

“Hi Elliot,” I winked at him just to see him squirm and blush. I don’t think anyone understood how much entertainment I got out of making fun of the guy. Emma glared at me playfully over Elliot shoulder.

Sticking my tongue out at her, I pushed Elliot away and made my way to my locker. The halls were half empty, a bunch of teenagers scattered around while the Janitor mopped the floor at the end of the hall, isn’t he supposed to do it while we aren’t here?

Shaking my head, I pulled my English textbook from the stack of books that I had shoved in last week. Papers flew out from under the stack, groaning I squatted down to pick them up and gathered them all in my hands. I stood up and threw everything back into the yellow locker.

You know that feeling you get when you know someone is looking at you? That prickly feeling that runs down your spine as the eyes follow your every move but when you turn there isn’t anybody there? It was happening to me but when I turned around there was someone there and that wasn’t the worst part, the worst part was that it was Wyatt that was staring at me.

His eyes dark and calculating, they followed every moment my body made. The hair on my arms raised and goose bumps formed on my arm, I rubbed against them trying warm up the sudden cold that drifted through my body.

A muffled scream came from my closed mouth as two arms wrapped around my waist, hurriedly twisting on my heel I let out a breath of relief when I saw it was Ace who was holding me. Leaning into his chest I willed my heart to calm down, Ace tightened his hands around me and drew me closer to him. I turned my head to the side a little only to see that Wyatt was still there and he was staring, full on staring at the intimate moment Ace and I were sharing.

Ace brought his hand up to my hair and tangled his fingers through my locks before he pushed my head into his chest, I let out a cry of surprise.

“Stop looking at him,” He murmured, tracing small calming circles on my hip while his other held my head on his chest. I could hear the beating of his heart beneath my ear.

Thump

Thump

Thump

I really do think it was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard in my life, it was living proof that Ace was alive. He was breathing, he was warm and he was nearly mine.

My God, I sound like I’m in love.

The distant sound of the bell ringing broke through my thoughts and I pulled away from Ace’s embrace, missing the heat radiating off of him instantly. Grabbing his hand she led them to first period. Ace swung our hands as we walked into English, a few curious glances were sent our way but other than that no one paid much attention to us, which I was thankful for.

“Come on in guys,” I told my two best friends as the stood nervously in front of my front door. Emma had on a beautiful yellow sun dress with a pair of white gladiators, Elliot was dressed in a nice pair of jeans –the nicest pair he has I might add- and a yellow polo shirt. It was so adorable how the matched but as you could see, they had dressed to impress seeing as the last time they had met my Mom they were both scared out of their minds.

My Mom was already home, she was in the kitchen preparing the dinner for tonight. Yeah, I was also pretty damn shocked. Emma and Elliot trailed behind me as we walked into the dining room just as my Mom was busy setting the table.

Looking up she smiled at the couple and her eyes zeroed in on her hands, “You guys are finally together?” She questioned.

Emma and Elliot nodded their heads stiffly, I stifled the giggle that wanted to erupt from my mouth but barely contained it. They looked like they were constipated.

Dinner was awkward to say the least, Emma and Elliot were on their best behaviour, neither of them burped after finishing their soda nor did the chew with their mouths open. It was like someone possessed my best friends bodies, it was funny to watch. Both of them were calling my Mom ma’am or Miss Blake.

The atmosphere finally lost some of its tension when the time for dessert rolled around, my Mom had went out  bought brownies for us all.

“Thank you for dinner Mrs Blake, it was lovely,” Elliot was stumbling over his words, trying to get them out as fast as he could so he could leave. My Mom smiled at him and nodded her head before she told them both to have a good night and closed the door.

I helped my Mom with the dishes, she washed and I dried. We done this in silence, neither of us not knowing what to say, it hurt me inside to say that I couldn’t have a proper conversation with my own Mother.

“Hey Mom?” I called out as I placed the last plate in the kitchen cupboard, I watched her dry her hands with a paper towel before she threw it away and waited patiently for me to carry on. I took a deep breath and tried to steady my wildly beating heart.

“Why do you hate me?” I asked her, sadness creeping into my voice causing a raspy edge to take tone to it. My Mom gasped and brought her hand up to her mouth, tears rimmed the corners of her eyes.

“Why would you think that honey?” She asked me, her voice disbelieving. She reached for me and pulled me into her arms. I pressed my face into her shoulder.

“You used to act like you hated me,” I told her, hardly keeping my tears at bay.

“I never hated you sweetie, I don’t think I ever could.”
