Luke
My new work place is outstanding. The people, the space, my office. It's like everything I could've wished for.
I look out over the city from my window, folding my arms. By the time I got the tour, met everyone and unpacked some things it's almost time to leave again.
The sun is setting to the west, the blinding light screaming in my face. I let it, closing my eyes and breathing in.
"This is a waste of time."
It's the same sentence I've heard for the last two years- it certainly isn't anything new and it certainly won't be the last time my father says it to me.
"So you've said." I turn away from him, leaning against the desk and biting on my pencil. I'm trying to finish an assignment and my father loitering in the door isn't helping me.
"There is little point in this degree Luke- you and I both know where you're going to be working." His voice is stern and my head snaps back towards him, my eyes glaring.
"You don't get a say in what I'm going to choose with my life- you've done more than enough." I snap. He frowns, his lip curling in a snarl.
"What's that supposed to mean? I give everything for you!"
"You dragged me away from the first place that felt like home in years, from a girl and friends I loved, from perhaps a future with them all." I twirl the chair around to face him, my voice raising with each word. "Moving me about, disencouraging my dreams is not giving everything to me!"
His fist tightens around the door handle for a moment before he sighs, pulling it shut behind him as he says, "You're not going to disappoint me the way your siblings did."
And then he's gone.
A knock on the door clears my thoughts and I turn around, offering a smile to whoever is there.
Harry Dai, my old college friend stands there. He grins at me, his hands tucked into his pockets as he strides in.
"Look at you- an office to yourself." He whistles, looking around the place.
I stride over to him, smiling. "It's good to see you man."
He returns my hug, patting my back. He pulls back from me, taking a step back before looking around the room again. "So, how you enjoying Van City?"
"It's good- it's certainly starting to feel like home." I smile, rubbing my arm. "You live nearby?"
"Nah, I just flew in to see my dad for a few days. I wanted to check in on you too." Harry shrugs, his hands finding his pockets again. "I was surprised to see you just drop everything back at home."
"It wasn't so much a drop- it was just time to move on. Lucy was going anyway." His eyes light up slightly at the mention of her name, his mouth curling upwards.
"How's Lucy doing anyhow?"
"She's fine, she's just..Lucy." I smile back at him, shaking my head thinking about her. She's got a date with Fey tonight and was rushing about the house like crazy. She's bringing her over, so I'm kicked out of the house. "Big date tonight- so as usual, she's driving me crazy."
He laughs. "Girl? Boy?"
"Girl." I nod. "I think she really likes her."
"Good- I'm happy for her. She's a brilliant girl, and it certainly helps that she can cook the hell out of any meal." He smiles again and I laugh, thinking about her trying to make gourmet pop-tarts and other shitty dollar food that the three of us would snack on.
