I opened my eyes, groaning. I looked around at the ceiling above me. Wow, that was a weird dream that I ha-

Wait a second, my eyes, their open?

I gripped the bed next to me and slowly but surely, pulled myself up. I’m alive? But how can that be? I was supposed to be dead. Something hurt when I tried to move. I lifted up my hospital gown and looked at my stomach. There were stitches on the bottom right portion of my stomach. Stitches? But that must mean-

My thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of a door opening. Cindy poked her head in and smiled.

“My, my, look who finally woke up.” she said while entering the room.

My eyes followed her as she walked over to the sink to wash her hands. Is this real life? Am I actually alive?

“I’m guessin’ you’re shocked, huh sweet pea?” Cindy said.

“Cindy, what’s going on?” I groaned, still having pain from the stitches.

“Why, we got that nasty tumor out of you, honey.” she said.

“Y-you what?” I said in shock.

Cindy stopped what she was doing on the counter and walked over to me. She put one hand on my shoulder with a big smile.

“You’re cancer-free, Rach.” she said.

My face lit up, and I smiled the biggest smile I have in months, “I….I don’t have cancer anymore.” I said. “I don’t have cancer anymore!”

Cindy smiled and gave me a little hug, “You’re all better.” she said.

I couldn’t stop smiling. I was so happy! I am cancer free. Cindy glanced over at me and smiled.

“Now, I have to give you this post-surgery gelatin type of thing. It doesn’t taste like much, but it helps with the pain.” she said, handing me a spoonful of it. I popped the spoon in my mouth and chewed. It was squishy and slimy, just like Jell-O.

“It’s really weird.” I said to Cindy.

“Ain’t it, though?” she replied, cleaning up the counter.

“Oh my God! Cindy, where’s my sister? Does she know I’m okay?” I asked.

“Oh yes dear, she knows that you’re all right. She just got done sobbin’ them happy tears, but I’ll have someone go get her right away.” Cindy pulled a walkie talkie out of her shirt pocket, “Timothy, would you be so kind as to get Rachel Hudson’s sister Katy from the Lobby and bring her up to room 1104?” she asked through the walkie talkie.

“Sure, thing, Cindy.” it responded.

After a couple of minutes, the door opened and a voice said, “Here you are, ma’am.”

Katy stepped into the room, looked at me for a second, then ran up to my bed to hug me. This was my favorite place to be, inside of Katy’s hugs. We didn’t say any words, we just hugged and smiled. That’s the great thing about hugs, they speak the words unspoken. Katy pulled away from my hug and sat down on the bedside.

“How do you feel?” she asked me.

“Sore, tired, a little overwhelmed, but other than that I’d say I’m doing pretty darn good.” I replied.

Katy smiled at me, “Good.”

Cindy walked over and handed me a glass of water with some antibiotics, “I know the last thing you want is to take these, but it’s doctor’s orders.”
