Everything rushed by as we drove down the highway. I had no idea where Katy was, but I had a feeling that Shannon knew. She didn’t say much after we left Eva’s house. All she told me was that she had a pair of shoes and a jacket inside of her car and that we were going somewhere.
There was silence in the car. Shannon had her eyes fixed on the road while I wondered where on earth we could be going. I didn’t recognize a single thing around us, not even a grocery store.
“You know kidnapping is against the law.” I said jokingly.
“It’s not really kidnapping if you agree to get in the car with me, trusting me that I am taking you someplace awesome. Plus, you love me and you know I wouldn’t kidnap you.” Shannon replied.
“So you’re not going to tell me where we’re going?” I asked.
Shannon didn’t answer.
“I’m guessing that’s a ‘no’.” I said.
Shannon smiled and winked at me, taking her eyes off of the road for a split second.
I sighed and leaned my head against the car window. The soft rumble of the highway was enough to put me to sleep.
I groggily opened my eyes to find myself in Shannon’s parked car. The sun shined directly on my face and I put my hand up to cover the blinding light. There were talking outside of the car. I turned to my left to find Katy and Shannon sitting on the hood of Katy’s car. Opening the car door, I slid out of the vehicle and stood up. Shannon caught a glimpse at me.
“Hey, there she is!” Shannon said.
I slowly walked towards the both of them with my arms crossed in my jacket. It was colder than I’m used to. Katy and I looked at each other. She smiled, but I continued to cross my arms and didn’t say anything.
“Where are we, Shannon?” I asked.
“Don’t you recognize this place?” she asked in shock.
Looking around at my surroundings, I tried to put together a memory in my mind. This place was familiar, but I just couldn’t put my finger on it. There were faint images of a girl climbing trees in a tomboyish way. She fell out of the tree and her knee was bleeding. I reached for my kneecap and felt the bump of a scar. Suddenly, it came into my mind.
“This was my hiding place.” I remarked. We were in Santa Barbara.
Shannon smiled. “There ya go, kiddo.”
“So tell me,” I said while taking a seat on a cushion of dead pine needles, “why did you bring me to Santa Barbara?”
Shannon lifted up her hands in innocence. “Don’t ask me.”
Turning my attention toward Katy, I saw that she had the look of guilt on her face.
“I kind of wanted to take you somewhere here.” she said. “Would you mind?”
I uncrossed my arms and sighed. “Great, more getting into a car and not knowing where I’m going.” I rolled my eyes and slid into the passenger side of Katy’s car.
Through the window, Shannon’s muffled voice called out, “I’ll see you guys back at home!”
Katy got into the car and started the engine.
“Shannon’s not coming?” I asked.
“No. Not this time, sweetie.” Katy said.
