What are Pharasites?
Pharasites are humans that get possessed/infected by Shadows(since they act like parasites). When this happens, it's called either a possession or an infection, and the human often exhibits worrisome signs for a short period of time before they succumb to the change, and become animalistic and dangerous.
This is what some people nowadays call the "Mental Catastrophe". But according to the public eyes, it's just some rumor.
They have the ability to teleport as well read minds, whether on earth or in the metaverse.
How did this happen?
At midnight, before April arrived, scientists have discovered an unknown dimension right near the real world, eventually turning the world around them into an alternate universe, one that can project thoughts into reality. Some of them transformed this into feral monsters.
This was called Metaverse and it can only occur at night.
Who might the victims be of this incident?
A lot of people in modern day society have much more darker secrets and/or lust for power, so it's no surprise that, in specific parts of the globe, shadows wouldn't target their victims individually.
Here in Japan, victims of this were mostly located near Shujin Academy or in different parts of Shinjinku/Shibuya.
Is there an organization that deals with this mess?
As a matter of fact there is. A secret organization called Mentality Emancipating (and)Traversing Anomaly Squad, other wise known as METAS. Their job is to investigate the predicament all while dealing with the Pharasites.
It consist of a group of secret agents who have their own unique part time jobs.
Despite being the case, a rumor had been spread saying that they were one of those suspicious organizations that would always experiment you in the most terrifying ways. So, METAS had to keep themselves at a low profile in order to not get caught.
MONA(Metaverse Observational Navigational Archetype)
Morgana is actually a robot(in the form of a cat) created by a former METAS leader, Wakaba Ishikki, to investigate the anomalies in the Metaverse, along with a programming piece known as the MetaNav. In daylight, he's a regular black cat, but in night time he appears to be more anthropomorphic.
He also serves as a guide to Ren and his outcasted friends throughout the adventure. (Yes, he's also amnesiac and will remember in time.)
Lupin Masquerade
It's a unique ball festival that was sponsored by a diet politician named Masayoshi Shido. It involves masquerade dresses and masks and is usually hosted in schools and in very wealthy/political buildings.
However, there is something dark about what happens in that Masquerade ball that no one knows yet.
Who is Wakaba Isshiki?
Former scientist/leader of METAS who was the first to discover the Metaverse, but was turned down by the community along with Shido for performing "forbidden experiments". Thus she cleared her name and started disappearing from not just the public and authorities, but also her family.
She even took away some bits of memory data from Morgana's AI brain and from METAS' analytical room, thus making him an amnesiac.
It is unclear what her actual intentions are, but according to some of her peers, they said that she was "somewhat of an introvert that never trusted anyone easily".
Team Shadow
A group of distorted Pharasites(aka the bosses of the Persona 5 game plus OCs) that antagonize METAS throughout the adventure. But unlike The Conspiracy, Team Shadow does not ultimately working for a malevolent deity such as Yaldabroth.
Rumors have it that Wakaba is responsible for holding this team, however, that assumption may verified as false, especially if there is no concrete evidence.
In this Universe
Ygor and Lavenza. Lavenza is turned into a butterfly and serves as a hidden guide for the heroes. And Ygor is in charge of both METAS and Mementos.
