"Oh my goodness I'm going to miss you." My best friend wraps her arms around my neck. I almost fall down from the force of her arms around me. "Why do you have to leave?" She pushes me backwards with a frown on her face."I can't stay here anymore L and you know that." I turn around and slam the door on my old yellow VW. "You won't even know my gone." I jokingly punch her in the arm and smile.
She doesn't smile back. "Did your parents say bye?" She leans up against my car and looks at me with her worried look. I remember in 8th grade when we'd have a big test she'd always have that expression. Eyebrows mushed together and raised very slightly with her lips pushed out.
"No..... they didn't." I look up at my childhood house from the driveway. "If they want to say bye they can come to me." I sigh and look back down. My parents have been distant towards me ever since my sister was killed last year. We barley speak.
My sister was only 7 when she died in a car accident. I was the one driving. It was raining that day and my car hit a big sheet of water. After that I lost control and the car flipped.
My sister was in critical condition. She died a few minutes before the ambulance got there.
Ever since that day my parents haven't spoke to me much. They think it was my fault.
I guess it was.
"Well you should probably go before it gets too late." She hugs me one last time. "I love you Ellie." I feel her squeeze hard.
I squeeze back. "I love you too..."
Lisa then climbs into her car and cruises away. I stand in my driveway alone. My thoughts were going 100 miles per hour. I was trying to figure out wether I should go say goodbye.
No.
The little voice in the back of my head screamed "no" over and over, but I didn't listen. I walked straight into the house.
As I walked in I could hear the tv playing. Probably a football game or some sports event. I could smell something cooking also. They were going on with their everyday events like i wasn't even leaving.
I walk towards the kitchen and lean up against the door frame. My mother was mixing something in a sliver bowl. Probably some mashed potatoes.
"You guys aren't even going to say goodbye?"
She looked over at me and stopped mixing. She reached over for a rag to whip her hands off.
"I hope you find what you're looking for in the city." She says quietly.
"I hope you guys have a great time without me." I whip around on my heels and walk out. I was trying everything I could not to cry.
I climb into my car and peeled out of the driveway. I was on my way to a new life. Hopefully a better one.
I'm moving to the city of Memphis. I'm suppose to be staying with Lisa's older sister Sarah till I can get my own apartment. I got a job as a journalist for a magazine company. It pays well so I'll have my own living space in no time.
