When the mother of two came home, she discovers Sakura and her two kids putting together a puzzle. When Sakura looks up, she smiles.
"Welcome back Mrs. Tendo," the younger girl says cheerily.
[Name] arches an eyebrow at the mention of Pein's last name. "Pein and I are no longer together Sakura, I thought you knew this."
With a sheepish grin, Sakura says, "Not to be a stalker or anything Miss... [Name], but I thought Mr. Tendo and you got back together. Wasn't that why he was here these past two weeks?"
[Name] pinches the bridge of her nose and closes her eyes. "It's a long story, but just to make it short, I am not, not ever in my whole life of living, getting back together with that despicable man."
"Oh," is all Sakura can respond while giving the older woman a pitiful look. "You still have that one guy, right?"
"Yes, I still have Kakashi." [Name] sighs. "Enough talk, let me get my wallet to pay you."
The mother digs in her purse, pushing the baggie full of cheerios, and her car keys to grab her wallet. She opens it up and pulls out some cash.
"Here," the mother says, handing it off to Sakura. The younger woman takes it with a smile. "I might need you to babysit more, so I hope you're ready to be paid again."
"I would love to babysit more Miss [Name], but I'm going off to college soon. Maybe you could put them in a daycare or something. That way they can learn and meet new children, possibly have playdates and such." Sakura pauses before adding in, "It's only a suggestion."
[Name] considers the idea. She knows both of her kids have abandonment issues, thanks to their no good father; however, it wouldn't be such a bad idea for them to meet other children and make friends. She dwells on the idea of her also making friends as well.
After Pein had left her, her friends had gone with him. Granted, they were his friends before they were ever her friends. Although Itachi, who claims to be the kids' uncle, comes through and calls every few months, while also buying gifts for the children. Deidara and Sasori do the same too, but ultimately never visits as much.
The mother exhales loudly and visibly deflates. "Okay, I understand. I'll find them a daycare."
...
[Name] cleans the kitchen after she served her kids' dinner. While she's cleaning the grease off a pan, her phone starts ringing. She checks the caller ID and sees that it's Pein. She rolls her and chooses to ignore it.
After the sixth call, she decides to answer seeing that the faster she deals with this headache of a man, the faster he'll leave her alone. She presses the phone to her ear, and the first words that come out of his mouth are:
"I know that you're mad."
She scowls and responds with, "You don't think?"
She hears him sigh. "I'm sorry, I really am."
[Name] gets right to the point, no longer wanting him to apologize anymore. "Why didn't you tell them you were leaving? Why didn't you be a parent for once and tell them the truth?"
"You know I bend to their every whim when they start crying. I can't deal with their sad faces and their crying. I'm sor—"
[Name] interrupts him. "So you're letting me deal with them instead?! Why am I the one who always has to console them when they're upset?"
"I told you I'm sor—"
She interrupts him again. "No, no. You can't apologize for this, there is no excuse for this."
"Baby, just list—"
And again. "Don't call me baby, I am not your baby."
"Babe can you just—"
And again. "No, you were only here for the good times, and when you see a dark cloud in your beautiful sunny sky, you run for the hills and never have to deal with the storm that's coming!"
"[Name]—"
And again, she cuts him off. "And you wonder why I divorced your sorry ass! You can't ever be responsible for anything! I always have to deal with the messes you make and all the havoc you wreck!"
She breathes in deeply as she calms her erratically beating heart. "I can't handle your shit anymore Pein. You were a terrible husband and an even worse father."
By this point, tears are cascading down her cheeks and she's glad Pein isn't here to see her cry. She keeps her voice steady as she cries, something she's perfected over the years when dealing with Pein.
"I deserved better Pein, and you know it. You treated me like garbage, like some second-class whore. You never loved me, but I... I loved you. I loved you so much."
She sniffs and wipes her nose with the back of her hand. Pein's voice comes out as a soft whisper when he talks.
"[Name], I'm sorry."
A bubbling rage explodes from her as she yells into the phone, "Is sorry all that you can fucking say?! Sorry isn't going to fix—"
Now he's the one to cut her off. "Would you just fucking listen to me for once?" His voice is soft like he's been broken down to nothing. The mother stays quiet, her anger subsiding for now.
"I know I'm not the best father, in fact, I'm an absolutely awful parent. I'm sorry for leaving you with the mess I've made, and I know not all the sorries in the world can ever make you like me again but I just... I don't know," he says. "I decided to stay in town. I want to stay in my children's lives, so I'm living with Itachi for a while until I can rent an apartment or something."
"Pein, I could care less about your living situations, and you can keep your apologies because it doesn't excuse your irresponsibleness," she states. "You lack all responsibility and continue living like a kid. Grow the fuck up and be the man you claim to be."
[Name] hears her children calling for her from the dining room, and hangs up the phone immediately. She rests her phone on the counter, face down, and wipes her face before heading towards the dining room.
She sees her kids sitting in their spots and looking up at her with big round eyes.
"Is daddy coming back?"
[Name] realizes how loudly she was speaking on the phone and assumes they overheard her conversation with their father.
It's about time she told them the truth.
