It starts when the lightning strikes

It was like lightning. It was quick, sudden and surprising. That's how I ended up loving my best friend, Lisa. We know each other ever since we were little girls. I was seven years old to be exact and she was six. I can still remember the day her family moved in to our neighborhood. It was summer and very hot. I was in our front yard selling lemonade when a mini van parked in the house opposite to ours. A girl with big round eyes; hair in ponytails and with bangs, went out of the vehicle. She wears a white shirt with a big pink ribbon print. She paired her shirt with pink shorts and white Chuck Taylor.

The girl smiled and waved at me. Of course, I did the same. Her mom gave her some coins and she run fast to my lemonade stand.

"Hey. I would like to have some lemonade." The girl said.

"Here you go." And I gave her the cup of refreshment.

"I'm Lisa." She said as she handed me the coins.

"I'm Jennie"

"It's nice to meet you, Jennie. I hope we can be friends."

And that was the start of our fifteen years of friendship. We always stick around together like every normal best friends do. We knew each other's secrets. Of course, who else should know. We're like sisters, or perhaps soul mates. We knew when one was sad. And we only needed the other to get back on track.

I love her ever since the day I met her. I love her as the best friend I can't live without. But that love changed on the night of our senior prom. I can still remember her walking out of their house. Her arm linked with her date, James. She's wearing a peach colored dress. Her hair is on messy bun and her cute bangs is still there. My heart beat was so fast, I'm almost palpitating. I can't take off my eyes of her. The feeling was very weird. But I like it.

Lisa waved and smiled to me like the first day we met. Her mom decided to take a photo of us with our dates. I stood beside Lisa and our shoulders met each other. I felt a sudden spark, like electricity flowing through my body. I looked at her and she did the same to me.

"You look wonderful." I told her.

"You too." She said and she breaks our eye contact.

At that time I was confused with what I was feeling. I know I like her. No, I actually love her. However, I kept on denying it. Even I, myself, cannot accept the fact that I fell deeply in love with my best friend. And I know I shouldn't be because we're both girls.

It is easier if I fell in love with another girl. I can freely come out to her and I know she will accept and support me like she always does. But that is not the situation. My heart was robbed by Lisa. And she owns it until this day.

I've been hiding my true feelings for almost five years. It hurts to see her happy with the man she loves. But as her best friend, I need to support her relationship with James. Well, I'm happy as long as she's happy. Pain starts to fade when I see her beautiful smile. Sadness goes away when I hear her laugh.

Loving her secretly is enough for me. I know for sure that telling the truth will change a lot of things. I will definitely lose my best friend and the dearest person in my life at the same time. I never want that to happen. That is more painful than seeing her happy with someone else.

I was invited at James' birthday party. It was actually Lisa who begged for me to attend. She only wants me to come because she would set me up on a blind date. Lisa always does that. She wants me to date the guy she approves of. I remember the first blind date she set me up.

"You will only date guys that will pass my standards." Lisa said as she paints my nails pink.

"I'll be the one dating them. Shouldn't it be my standards they should pass?" I replied.

"Of course they should pass your standards. But they should also pass mine. Who's your lucky date for prom?"

"I still don't have a date." I answered.

"What do you mean you still don't have a date?"

"No one is asking me. How about you? Who's your date?" I asked as I moved my face closer to hers. Lisa blushed because of my question. She grabbed her pillow and hugged it so tight.

"I'm going with James." She replied. Of course, the former cheer squad captain is going to prom with the hottest guy in school.

"Ohhhhh. I'm excited for you."

"Don't worry about your date, Jennie. I got your back."

"What do you mean?"

Lisa gave me her widest smile as a reply. And the next thing I knew, I went to prom with Tom, the baseball team captain.
