When I opened my eyes, we were still in the plane. It was about twelve hours and we still hadn't reached Canada. I signed deeply and that earned me a raised eyebrow from my sitting partner. I guess it won't be bad to talk now.
Wait no, my breath, what if my breath smells. I quickly bent my head over and did something I learnt from a movie, she just blew air out of her mouth and lifted her hand immediately so she could check how her breath was.
When I did that thing within like ten seconds, I got up abruptly and said, "Um hi. My name is Ellie and you are?", I politely said extending my palm to meet his. He didn't even bother shaking my hand, what an attitude!
"I'm Mark. You slept, like a lot. The waitress came for your order but you were asleep. Should I call her back?", all this he said without smiling. How can you be so polite without smiling?!
What human being is he, I wondered.
"Yeah sure, I'm extremely hungry", I gestured rubbing my tummy.
The next thing I knew, the waitress had come and I placed my order and she left. Mark, my new friend or something, went right back to whatever he was doing on his phone. I used the time to study him, study his features.
I realized that he had a beauty spot on his neck, he had sharp, like very sharp jawlines, his nose was pointed as I described earlier, his eyes were different, they were a bit small, and his pupils were blue, like ocean blue. His hair was blonde, and it reached his neck, it wasn't organized but it was extremely hot on him. Something about this guy made me want to know more about him, Mark was just different from all the other people I've seen, boys which is.
You just met him, why the hell do you want to know everything about him, you're creepy.
I laughed at myself for thinking that way. Mark turned to me and asked with a confused look, "what's funny?" I smiled, " oh nothing, just a little conversation with myself." That's when I noticed that, my sentence sounded very wrong and would make me seem like an insane person, making me laugh even more. I stopped laughing and asked, " why don't you smile? You're always angry, no emotions whatsoever. Why?"
"You've literally known me for just like five minutes and you're telling me who I am. " He said, laughing a bit. His smile and his laugh just threw me away. Mark had organized teeth, like the teeth that don't look real, his teeth were also white. His smile wasn't the widest smile, but it was the best.
"Aww, looks like I just got a smile out of you, " I said smiling back, "tell me about yourself." It took him a while before he started talking.I'm sure he contemplated as to whether to tell a girl he met nearly five minutes ago about himself or just ignore her. "You know what, if you don't want to tell me, don't sweat it, at all." I said honestly.
"Oh it's fine, there's nothing special about me. So I'm Mark Zwedes, I'm 19 years. My dad is relatively rich, and so is my mum. I have about four siblings, yeah four. And I'm the oldest. I work for my dad, I'm like his assistant. We live in Toronto. Now tell me about yourself", he said with a warm smile.
"My name is Ellie, Ellie Presly. I'm 17, just turned 17 this year on 17th February, just so you will know. And I have an older brother, he's 19. I also come from a relatively rich family, well rich enough for me to sit in First Class, sorry that was not necessary." He gave me a warm smile indicating that it didn't matter or he simply didn't care. "I'm also going to Toronto, Canada to start a new life by myself. It's a really long story. Your surname though, what type of name is Zweddes? And what did you come to do in Ghana?", I said with a low giggle.
"Well, if you care to know, my surname isn't just any normal name. You'll notice when you come to Toronto. I won't say much. And yes I came to Ghana because my girlfriend is there. And since it's the summer, I come every year. Yes, it's a long distance relationship."
I paused and thought for a moment so that I didn't speak before I thought about it, "So the situation here is that, you're in a long distance relationship? Wow, that's just wow. Is it working? Like how are you sure she still loves you? And she isn't cheating on you secretly, or something like that?" I asked out of curiosity. Honestly, I've heard of long distance relationships but they don't always work, well most definitely won't work for me. My emotions won't let me."Well, it's working. At least that's what I think. But I'm not cheating on her and I've given her all my love. I hope she's reciprocating the same love if not I just don't know." he said as if he was now realizing that things like that happen. Drunk in love I guess",he said.
" Well I'm not discouraging you or anything, it's just what I think. And it happens so yeah. What type of songs do you listen to?" I asked, trying to lighten up his mood because it affected him greatly, I could tell from his face.We spoke and laughed and disturbed everyone that was around us. After sometime, the waitress brought my order, which was chicken salad and a can of coke. Mark made it very very difficult for me to eat my food because he made me give him like a half of my salad because he continually looked at it. He was very nice, and it's sad that that was probably going to be the last time we will ever meet. I took his phone and started going through all his pictures, the good, the bad and the ugly, which was the most dominant being that he was not a picture person at all. We spoke about all the random shit in the world, I ended up using the bathroom for about five minutes.
"That was a long time Ellie. I wonder what you did there?" he raised his left eyebrow and gave me a smirk, and if that wasn't sexy, I don't know what else is.he said. "I was just, you know, just using the bathroom. Wanna go check? Nobody's in there now?" I asked him as a joke. "Sure, I will. Because I actually want to know what went on in there." He said, standing up from his seat, the first time for the whole flight. From his looks, I'd say that he was 6'1, he was built, he had broad shoulders. He casually pulled his hoodie over his head and I watched him walk towards the female washroom. Thank goodness we were at the back because that would have been a big issue, "You're actually going? You know I was kidding right? You really don't have to do this?", I begged. He took just three more steps, probably the three boldest steps he has taken after his first three steps as a baby, into the female washroom, precisely where I used and walked out with his hands over his nose.
"That place stinks Ellie. I'm disappointed. I really am. You should have stopped me. I feel like I'm going to have a three week sickness because of this, and the germs you left there. Did you even flush after using it? Move out of my way you smelly poo girl." He said slightly moving me to the side because I was so caught up in laughing that I had no idea that he wanted to pass. When we went back to our seats, we laughed over what had just happened and then we went back to silence.
The silence I was hoping to avoid came right back. Great
I learnt a lesson by my encounter with Mark Zweddes, apart from him having a very hilarious name. I learnt that we shouldn't judge people by their outward appearance, he was very rude to me at the beginning, but getting to know him I noticed that he was far from that.
Should we exchange contacts? Nah, he should ask I'll look desperate. But I will really want to talk to him again!!! Ugh Mark, just ask. Okay fine fine I'll ask, heck no I won't. I'll enjoy the silence.
After this conversation with myself, I heard the flight attendant saying that we had safely arrived in Toronto, Canada. Finally, time to step into the real world. After the plane landed and i stood up to get my suitcase, Mark reached up to pick it up for me. I immediately smelled the scent of his cologne, and it reminded me of Cobby.
Maybe he is my soulmate, I should really take his number.
"Ellie, your bag is here. Snap out of whatever you're thinking about and take your darn suitcase it's so heavy." He said as he placed it in front of me.
"Thanks, for everything. Your company was very interesting. I won't forget this flight and I sure won't forget you." He smiled and grabbed me for a hug, not so tight but not so loose, not so quick too. "It was nice knowing you too," he whispered into my ear. We smiled and walked apart.Wayyyy to go Ellie, now you're never going to meet him again.
We parted ways and I went to get my things checked and when i was done, I took a seat because my dad said he arranged for a cab to take me to my hotel. Just when I sat down and pickup my phone, inserted my ear pieces and was just about to put the ear pieces into my ear, I heard a familiar voice, "Ellie, is that you?" I turned back and I noticed him immediately, that was Kelvin.
Fuck!
