Sophie stepped over the brilliantly colored Autumn leaves. She tried to relish in the satisfying crunch as they fell apart under her boots, but she couldn't. They reminded her too much of him.
~~two years earlier~~
"Why have I never learned about this?" Keefe yelled, diving into a massive pile of leaves. Sophie's face rose into a grin as Keefe emerged from the leaves. Sophie had taken a wrong turn when teleporting the two of them and had ended up in one of the Forbidden Cities. They had landed in a dimly lit park separated from the sky with haggard trees shedding their flaming leaves.
"Why don't the trees in the Lost Cities do this?" Keefe asked, rebuilding his throne of leaves.
"Well, it had to do with the amount of sunlight that the leaves are able to phot-" Sophie trailed off as Keefe shoved his tunic full of the itchy pieces of foliage.
"What are you doing?" she asked, walking towards him.
"I'm collecting leaves," he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Put some in your tunic."
"Why would I do that?" Sophie asked, smirking and crossing her arms across her chest.
"Because nobody is able to resist my charm," Keefe explained, making an overtly exagerated kissy-face. Seizing the opportunity, Sophie bent over, put her hands on his chest, leaned in...
...and pushed him backwards into the leaves. She barely had enough time to laugh before Keefe pulled her down with him. Sophie landed unceremoniously on top of Keefe, leaves crunching between the two of him. Though the autumn air was chilly, Sophie's face was warm, from the creeping blush that threatened to overtake her whole body, as well as Keefe's warm breath.
His periwinkle eyes sparkled with the mischevious glint that she had grown to fall in love with over the years.
"That's not how you do it," Keefe whispered, shedding the rambunctious exterior that he always had. His fingers found Sophie's neck, spreading the blush further with every touch.
"Wha-" Before the words left her lips, Keefe brought his mouth to hers. Sophie immediately felt the heat blossom from her head to her toes. Her heart hammered against her chest, threatening to break through. She could feel Keefe's heart reverberating against her own hammering chest.
Sophie let the initial shock slide away as she melted into the kiss. She wound her fingers through the blonde hair that Keefe always worked so hard to maintain. His skin blushed warm against her fingers as she cupped them around his neck.
Leaves prickled against the bare skin of Sophie's neck, but she hardly noticed them.
"Hey!" a loud voice bellowed out from behind Sophie. She bolted from the kiss, as much as she wished it could have lasted longer. Keefe lifted his blushing face to see the figure that had interrupted them. A burly man dressed in countless layers was approaching, his footsteps heavy over the leaves.
Sophie hastened to pull herself off of Keefe before the man got the wrong idea. "You kids," the man grumbled. "The park is closed. Go get lovey dovey somewhere else!" Sophie's face tingled red hot with embarrassment as she stood up, pulling Keefe with her. She clasped his hand in hers, dragging him through the park bathed in twilight.
The pair dodged downed trees and dismal shrubs, trying to outrun the embarrassment of being caught in such a situation.
Finally, the two slowed to a stop behind a massive birch tree.
"Well, that was...uhm.." Keefe sputtered. His unnerving confidence and charm had melted away, revealing a boy head over heels for a girl.
"It's my turn now," Sophie whispered, pulling the collar of Keefe's cape down towards her. Their lips met again, reigniting the spark that had been there before. Keefe wrapped Sophie up in his arms as she slid hers up behind his neck.
