Sophie walked next to Fitz down the French street. The smell of fresh baked goods wafted up over the balmy spring air. It wasn't Elvin quality air by any means, but the smell of warm bread came pretty close.

Sophie tried to focus on the sights and sounds of the city as they walked, not the fact that they very well could be walking into a trap set by the Neverseen to finally capture Sophie and her cognate. She hoped that it wouldn't be the case. The Black Swan wouldn't send them on a mission that could be a trap, right?

The human thoughts were jarring, but she was able to tune them out. She tried to focus on the people bicycling down the road road and the couple's hand in hand, or the kids with dogs on leashes walking in front of their parents.

Some small part of her wondered if she would ever have that in her life- the quaint simplicity. Probably not.

"Do you smell that?" Fitz asked, his nose in the air.

"French pastries," Sophie said fondly, her mouth watering.

"I think we should check it out," Fitz said. "I mean, if I was the Neverseen, that's where I would go." Fitz looked down at Sophie with the biggest puppy-dog eyes, and she had to relent.

"Good idea," she said, digging around her bag for the human money Dex had stolen from the ATM their last Forbidden Cities visit. The time they almost died at the hands of the Neverseen. Again.

Sophie put the map back into her bag and made her way down the quiet street with Fitz at her side. If she concentrated hard enough, she could almost convince herself that she was a normal girl on a date with the guy of her dreams. As soon as she did, she immediately felt guilty. Who was she to put her safety above others'?

She only noticed she was scowling when Fitz pointed it out.
"Is something going on?" He asked. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Sophie said, plastering a smile to her face. The worry in Fitz's expression was almost tangible. She really didn't deserve him.

"Look, there's the cart," she said, pointing up ahead.

After the two had chosen eclairs as their treat (Fitz was enamored with the idea of the human equivalent of a rippflefluff) they sat down on a bench overlooking the small town.

Sophie bit into her eclair carefully, making sure not to let the custard fall out. Fitz, however, was not having as easy of a time. Custard was all over his hands, jeans, and mouth. He was trying to lick it off his fingers when he saw Sophie watching and paused, still plastered with custard.

Sophie couldn't stop the giggle from erupting out of her. She laughed so hard her sides ached and tears brimmed in her eyes.

"That's the happiest I've seen you in a long time," Fitz said after her laughing fit.

"Yeah," Sophie agreed, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "It's been a  while." The two stared at each other, grinning, and soaking up the other's company until Sophie stood up.

"Stay put and I'll go get some napkins." Sophie strode back to the cart, asked in French for some napkins, and was in the process of turning around when she ran into a body standing in front of her. She backed up quickly, stammering for an apology. She had ran into a boy around her age, staring at her with piqued interest. He was pretty average looking, all things considered. Sandy brown hair, eyes a little darker.

"I'm so sorry," Sophie said in French, shifting to pass him. Before she could start back, he mirrored her movements, blocking her path.

"No worries," he responded. "Are you from around here?" he asked. The longer he stood there, the more apparent his thoughts became, and they weren't very good ones. Sophie self consciously shifted, feeling like a slide on a microscope as he stared at her.

"No," she said. "But I need to go." Sophie tried sidestepping him again, but he had his hand clasped around her elbow. Sophie's stomach sank as he wouldn't loosen his grip.

"Let me go!" she insisted, shrugging his arm away. "Don't touch me." She was finally able to stride past him and walk back to Fitz, who was now standing and walking towards her and the other boy, and had somehow wiped away the majority of the custard.

"What's going on?" Fitz asked. "Is he bothering you?" he asked, pointing to the guy, who was now backing up hesitantly.

"Look, I didn't know you had a boyfriend-" he started, but before he could finish, he tripped backwards on an undone lace that was definitely tied moments before. Sophie kept her hand at her waist, careful to make sure that nobody could see her using telekinesis. Sophie smiled, satisfied. She handed the napkins to Fitz, who looked at her in a mixture of shock and amazement.

"Not anymore he's not," Sophie said as the two continued walking.
