I know I literally just did a TamxBiana chapter right before this one, but I thought this would really fit them and so yeah, enjoy. Also, FLASHBACK spoilers!
A shiver ran through Biana. She wasn't sure if it was from the crying or the chill night air. Tears like ice dripped down her cheeks, leaving a tingling cold behind. She sniffled as she buried her face in her hands, pulling her knees close to her chest, not caring as wet dirt pressed against her dress.
Her life was a mess. Every day, it got worse and worse. It had been months and months, but Fitz refused to forgive their parents over trying to allow Alvar back into their lives. After what he had done to Sophie a first time, then again, she could see how he was mad- Sophie and Fitz were dating, after all, and she knew that Fitz would fight anybody that laid a hand on her.
Still, she couldn't rationalize the explosive arguments that punctuated every waking hour. Fitz was gone most of the time, and the few odd instances he did come around, it always ended in yelling, mostly on Fitz's part. With each passing day, there was more polarity between them. Biana suspected it was only a matter of time before he made her choose between him and their parents.
Biana tried not to think about it as she buried another sob. She had friends- very close friends. So why did she feel so irrevocably alone? As she looked around the dim garden, illuminated only by moonlight, she sucked in a deep, shuddery breath and tried to compose herself.
It was the perfect timing, too, because the next second, the sound of footsteps crunching over leaves spurred her to snap her head around. Scenarios played through her head- a Neverseen agent meant to kill or capture her, her parents coming to find her after she stormed out of the house when Fitz had thrown a glass against the wall, or Fitz coming to talk. None of her possible outcomes were even close, she realized, when a familiar tall figure dressed solely in black sauntered next to her spot in the dirt.
She sniffed, trying to wipe her tears away, not wanting to meet his eyes.
"What do you want?" she grumbled, even surprising herself with the edge in her voice.
"I wanted to talk to you," Tam said with surprising sincerity, not a trace of his trademark saltiness. Biana's breath caught as the world around them stilled.
"With everything that's happening with, ah, Fitz..." Tam coughed. "You've... changed. I mean, we all have, but-"
"You came to my house at nighttime to tell me I've changed?" Biana asked, finally turning to look at him, forgetting about how much of a mess she looked. Tam's stony demeanor flickered as she looked him dead in the eyes, glaring daggers.
"No," he said. "That's not what I meant," he grumbled, hanging his head. "What I meant was that..." he trailed off, mumbling something incomprehensible under his breath.
"What?" Biana asked.
Tam sucked in a big breath, staring her in the eye as he began to speak. "We're worried about you. I'm worried about you. You don't want to talk to any of us anymore, not that I can really blame you, with everything that's going on, but you've become so distant. No more bright pink dresses or sparkles or glitter or makeovers or anything." He continued as Biana's defenses lowered themselves.
"You don't deserve this. What Fitz is putting you through... that's not how you're supposed to treat family." Biana supposed he would know, given everything that had happened with his parents.
"You're lucky you have Linh," Biana said quietly, her voice thick with emotion as she stared at the ground. "I bet she would never do this." Tam didn't respond.
"I hate him," Biana seethed, after a moment. She didn't care how rude she sounded, if what she said was true or not. Right now, she hated Fitz. She hated him for a perfect relationship with the person of his dreams, for how he was dividing her family, for how he had become a different person, for how difficult he was to even be around.
Suddenly, her anger dissolved into a dark sadness. Who was she to hate Fitz? He was her brother! Shame filled her as tears welled again in her eyes and her throat constricted. She dissolved into sobs again, burying her face in her hands as her shoulders shook.
Again, Tam didn't say anything. He didn't need to say anything as Biana gave up all pretenses and let herself lean into him. He didn't stiffen or move away. He wrapped his arms around her tight, running his fingers through her hair as her tears soaked through his tunic. The world fell still as his heartbeat thrummed in her ears.
Her life was a mess. That much she knew. But in Tam's hold, she also knew that she could take it all on. She would talk to Fitz and her parents and get them to have an amicable conversation if it was the last thing she did. She would wear the bright colors she liked so much. She would talk to her friends and allow them to help her. She would do it all with Tam at her side.
That much she knew.
