Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep.
I winced and rolled over, scrunching my eyes, trying to get that...that sound out of my head. I hated that sound. More than anything. I despised it. I wasn't even 100% sure of what it was but it was giving me a POUNDING headache.
"Is she okay?! Why is it going faster? What's going on?! Do we need a doctor? Can somebody get a doctor?!"
I recognized the voice as Janelle's.
Wait...doctor? We're at the concert. Why would we need a doctor..?
I struggled to open my eyes, but..they wouldn't open. What was happening?!
I started to panic, and then I heard that damn beeping noise pick up speed again. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of struggling, my eyes fluttered open. I saw my best friend, frantically waving outside of the doorway of the room. If I wasn't confused out of my mind, I would probably find the scene in front of me amusing. But right now, I wanted to know what the hell was going on. Why weren't we at the concert meeting our future husbands...?!
After a few minutes of her frantic waving, Janelle turned back around with a 30-something doctor behind her.
"Oh my gosh you're awake!" she shrieked before launching herself at me, and I saw tears spilling out of her eyes.
I opened my mouth to answer her, but no sound came out.
What the hell?
So...I tried again.
No sound.
And again.
And again.
And again.
My mouth was forming the words. I knew how to do that.
But...no noise would come out of my throat.
Panicking, I reached up, gripping my neck, yet wincing in pain. That hurt so badly...
"Miss Berks, please allow me a moment to explain? I have a feeling I know what you're wanting to ask, and I'd like to clear things up for you." the doctor said.
I nodded, urging him to continue.
"Three weeks ago you and Miss Tresselt over here were...attending a concert. Do you remember this?"
I nodded.
"There was an accident....you..you were shot."
I just stared blankly at him.
No....
"You had surgery..to remove the bullet from your neck. You were quite lucky actually. It just barely missed your main arteries, but...your vocal cords were severly damaged in the process..there...there was nothing we could do for them...After the surgery, you were..in an induced coma..during the healing process so we could monitor your healing. You've healed nicely, we can remove your stitches later today and you may be able to be discharged tomorrow. But for now, I'd like to discuss some of your options."
I just shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes. I pulled my knees up to my chest, burying my face into them and just...crying.
I could hear Janelle and the doctor talking softly by the door, I just couldn't believe this.
