Authors Note: I wrote this before we found out that Adrien's mom was dead (or in a coma), not just gone. So in this book Emilie just left the household okay? Okay. And she left way earlier in Adrien's life. Thanks for reading!

{About Ten Years Earlier}

"You're not real. You're not my friend." Adrien whispered, turning away before he could see Marinette's hurt expression.

The pair stood in Adrien's bedroom shortly after his mother had left him. The young boy couldn't understand why she had left, so Adrien trembled with rage from the aftermath of what he perceived as betrayal. Marinette stared at him in the realization that her time was up.

Mari burst into tears. "B-but I'm your best friend. How could I not be real?!"

Adrien turned back around to face the girl wearing a dress made of petals. A dress he had designed in his daydreams. A dress that wasn't real.  "Go away! Father says that you're fake! And I trust him. You're just in my head! You're imaginary!"

Marinette crumpled to the ground, trembling. "B-but I need you! Don't leave me! Please! I'll die!" Her features twisted in pain as she screamed and pleaded with the young boy in front of her.

But he couldn't hear her anymore.

Marinette wandered the world, alone. No one could see her. No one could touch her. No one cared.

She drowned in her despair and loneliness. She missed Adrien. She missed the feeling of actually being able to touch things. She missed being happy.

Marinette winced, her entire body aching. She knew she was dying and wished that she could just die and get it over with, but it was not to be. She was cursed to die slowly over the period of ten entire years.

As Adrien grew older so did Marinette. She would occasionally visit him but he never saw her. She would whisper lovingly into his ears but he couldn't hear. No one could.

Soon Marinette stopped visiting him. It was too depressing.

So she slowly wasted away and cursed her luck. But she knew that she shared her fate with every other I.F. that had ever existed. It wasn't as if she would be the anomaly of the carefully crafted system made by Mother Nature.

But it still hurt. She still cried out in agony every night. She still cried until she had no more tears left.

Until one night close to when she knew she was going to die. She was happy for the first time in years. She was about to die! She would be free!

But once again she did not get what she was wishing for.

As she wandered the old park she used to play in, Marinette spotted Adrien sitting on a bench. He looked so sad and lonely that she wished that he could see her again. That they would be friends again.

"Felix." Mari whispered to a star far above. "I wish that Adrien could be my friend again. I wish that he could see me."

The star twinkled in response. Marinette closed her eyes and drank in the peace of the night. She could hear Adrien talking to himself so she turned towards him so that she could understand him better.

"What did I do to deserve this?" Adrien asked no one in particular, though to Mari it felt as though he was talking to her, "Why can't I just have a friend to be by my side, through thick and thin? I just... I just don't want to be alone anymore."

Marinette walked up to him and tried to hug the sad boy. Her arms went straight through him but she still hovered near him, wishing that she could comfort Adrien.

Marinette stayed there until Adrien sighed and stood up. She made a split decision and followed him to his house. She didn't know why she followed him, it was useless.

But that night Marinette decided that she would stay by Adrien's side even if he couldn't see her. She would love him even if he couldn't love her. She would spend her last few days with Adrien and she couldn't think of a better place to die.

And so while Adrien climbed into bed Marinette sat near him. She thought about how creepy that sounded, spying on a boy as he slept. Oh well. She liked being creepy if it meant being happy for a short while before death.

All throughout the night Marinette explored Adrien's room. She observed how much he had grown and how much more sad he looked than he had when he was a young child.

She also saw evidence of a harsh father and an absent mother. She saw a photo of a cat and a letter written to it on the desk. Apparently the cat had died not long ago.

At around 3:30 am Marinette started to feel strange. Her entire body tingled and her pain ended. She felt as if she was floating in midair. Her head felt light and fuzzy for a second and then it died down. What had happened? Was she dead? No. She couldn't be. She was still in Adrien's bedroom.

Marinette wandered over to Adrien's bathroom and gasped. She could see herself! She wasn't invisible anymore! Mari laughed, the sound invigorating her even further.

Mari looked at her pigtails that weren't tangled even though she didn't brush it. One of the few perks of being a I.F. She brushed a few wrinkles out of her white dress and smiled at herself in the mirror.

Mari skipped over to Adrien's bed. She quickly wriggled underneath his blankets and giggled to herself.

She was gonna scare Adrien so badly!!

This chapter is super short but I hope you like it regardless.

What do you think of Marinette's relationship with Adrien so far? When she says that she loves him does she mean it in the way that a friend would or is it something more?
