Marinette had never thought that it could even go this badly. She tried to look everywhere at once, tears burning in her eyes. There was Adrien, talking to Hawkmoth, his eyes clouding over. There was Nino, his eyes wide from pain and fear, the curved dagger still stuck into his side. There was Peacock, her head held high in triumph.
No matter where she looked she saw despair.
The crowd around them was oblivious, their screams only full of excitement at the thought of hearing Jagged Stone play.
It was a strange battlefield, this forest of bodies. They swayed with the music, just as a tree sways in the wind. And all around them chaos reigned, though they could not see it.
Marinette snapped her attention back to Peacock as the lady pulled another knife from her belt. It was strange, how much Hawkmoth and his companion favored knives over guns or even swords. Maybe it was because they could control it better.
Maybe it was because they could see the struggle of their victims up close.
As Peacock charged towards her, Marinette contemplated why she hadn't anticipated that Hawkmoth's new companion would be joining him on his little mission. It had been a stupid mistake, and a potentially deadly one. She screamed as Peacock ran straight towards her, the dagger held out at her side.
Marinette had never truly fought anyone before. Well, during the dark days where hardly anyone knew she existed she had taken her anger out on trees. Granted, her hands went straight through them. And they didn't have a murderous gleam in their eyes they charged towards her with a deadly weapon. But, oh well, at least she had her natural abilities.
As Peacock swung her dagger at Marinette's face, she tried to duck, her pigtails falling out of her already slipping ribbons in the process. If she had been left to her own devices, she would have died right then and there, but thankfully she had her special powers.
The powers of clumsiness.
When she tried to duck, Marinette's foot caught on some imaginary object and she fell, her squeal startling Peacock. The murderous lady stumbled forward, trying to spin on her heel to turn back and finish her mission. But apparently she had forgotten something very important.
As Marinette looked up from her position on the ground, Nino stabbed Peacock from behind. It was a nasty move, the lowest of lows, but it had to be done. His wound flowed freely, he had stupidly taken the dagger out in order to use it on Peacock, and he wobbled on his feet as he drove the dagger further into the dark lady's chest.
Peacock screamed, her voice desperate and full of pain, before she fell to her knees. Her fingers clutched at the air in Hawkmoth's direction, a silent plea for help. But his back was turned to her, and Adrien was standing before him, a dazed expression on his face.
Adrien!
Marinette grimaced in Nino's direction. It was a silent plea for him to get help, a question, and an order wrapped into one look. He nodded back to her absentmindedly, his gaze on the dagger in his hands. Mari took that as permission to help Adrien, and she sprung to her feet.
She would never get used to running through people, it was eerie and she avoided it at all costs. If someone didn't believe she existed she was nothing but a phantom to them. But it was the fastest way to Adrien, so she steeled herself and ran full sprint towards Hawkmoth and the now collapsed Adrien.
She couldn't be too late. She wouldn't be. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she was. It was her idea, her fault.
All her fault.
How could she have been so stupid? He had been so scared, but he had trusted her blindly. He hadn't even known about more than half of the things in her reality, yet she had thrown him towards Hawkmoth with a bow on his head.
When she was only feet away from Adrien she heard Hawkmoth say the worst possible thing he could say at that moment.
"Rise, Chat Noir," Hawkmoth growled triumphantly, "And serve me."
"NO!"
Marinette stumbled forward in a panic, her feet twisting over each other in a desperate attempt to speed up. She fell forward, tears falling into the air, and crashed into the rising form that had once been Adrien. A grunt and scream sounded before the pair landed on the dirt.
Hawkmoth gaped from above as Marinette blushed furiously from atop Adrien. Or at least... what had been Adrien. Her blush faded quickly, horror taking its place.
The creature in front of her was humanoid, that was true. But it's skin was as dark as the night, as was it's clothing, which seemed to be a leather type fabric. It's green eyes resembled a cats, and cat ears sprouted from its bushy blonde hair. A grin was painted across its face, revealing sharp canines.
"That was a purr-fect landing, Princess," the Adrien-beast said. Marinette was snapped out of her horror by the horrid pun, and she punched him lightly in the shoulder. This was Adrien, after all. She shouldn't be scared.
Above their heads Hawkmoth was regretting his decisions in life. Puns were his job. And this Chat Noir was stealing them! And using them incorrectly. Puns needed to be subtle. Puns needed to be consistent. Puns—
"Hawkmoth?" Marinette asked innocently, her body still splayed over Chat Noirs, "Can you please change Adrien back?"
Her puppy eyes swayed Hawkmoth only a little, and he scowled. He glared down at Chat Noir, who just shrugged nonchalantly. Why, oh why, did this creation have to be so disobedient?
"CHAT NOIR!" Hawkmoth screeched angrily, "KILL THIS GIRL AS YOUR FIRST TEST OF POWER!"
That was not the answer Marinette had been hoping for.
