I'm sitting in first period listening to my teacher bitch about the Cold War that we've already gone over twice. I roll my eyes and they almost slide shut.
Finally, the bell rings. "Yes," I mumble, sprinting out of the room. I walk down to my locker and open it, shoving my History books in and removing my Biology books. I set them in my bag and look down to see a note taped to my laptop. When I pull it out, it reads, 'Concerts are fun, but how does ice cream sound? Meet me in the courtyard after school. -Fin'
I smile and tuck the note in my pocket. Then I skip off to my next class,in an uncharacteristically good mood.
Along the way I spy a certain little vampire talking to some girl. Her eyes are big and wide as she stares at her, nodding along to everything she says. I stop dead in my tracks. Who does she think she is, manipulating some girl just because she can?! That's a real shitty move, if you ask me.
I grab Chayse's shirt and yank her backward, glaring at her. "So you think since you're some royal-blooded princess you can walk around like you own the fucking school? I don't think so, hot-shot." She blinks at me. "What?" Chayse says blankly.
I shove her and growl, "You know what, you little bitch." That sets her off. She throws a hard left hook that hits me in the side. I barely budge. "You call that a punch?" I smirk, throwing my own left hook. Mine hits her square in the jaw and she's sent reeling backward. I grin--it's been awhile since I was allowed to throw a punch like that.
Chayse runs at me, ready to hit me again. I easily dodge and toss her up against the bricks. "You may have been a good fighter where you come from," I say, "but here you're just pathetic. We take self defense classes daily. What do you do? A couple girly pushups each week? The ones where you get down on your knees?" I knee her in the stomach and she coughs up some blood.
I'm about to hit her again when I feel hands wrap around my waist. "Amber, what the hell are you doing?!" Fin says, his voice right in my ear. I answer harshly, "Teaching this bitch a lesson. Just because she's the princess doesn't mean she can boss around the school."
Chayse stands, wiping blood from the corner of her lip. "I wasn't bossing that girl around," she says. "I was asking her about some work that I didn't understand in Chemistry class." I blink, wide-eyed. "Wait--you were?" I say. She nods, picking up her books that she dropped. "Yes. I wasn't sure on one of the formulas and was asking if she knew it." The girl appears and hands Chayse a piece of notebook paper. She shows it to me and says, "See?" On it are several formulas and I hang my head, embarrassed.
"I'm so sorry," I say. Fin loosens his grip and lets me on the ground again. "I should have looked into that a bit more." Chayse shrugs, sticking out her hand to me. "It's okay. All's forgiven. And anyways, I don't even want to be the princess. I'd never abuse the power," she chuckles. I shake her hand and she smiles. The bell rings and Chayse walks off to class.
I go to walk to my class, but Fin stops me. "Ah ah ah, no you don't," he says, grabbing my arm. I give him a questioning look and he continues, "I think you need to cool down a bit after that. Come on." I let him take me off to...well, I'm not sure where.
Fin takes me to the dorms and we arrive at what I assume is his. I follow him in and almost laugh aloud--it's a mess. Clothes are strewn around, schoolwork is everywhere...you can hardly see the floor. Fin grins at me and says, "I know--so organized, right? I'm a victim of OCD?" I laugh and he gestures for me to enter.
I sit down on his bed and he sits beside me, laying back like a kid. "C'mon, don't be all civil 'n shit!" Fin exclaims, yanking me down with him. I laugh as my head hits the mattress, looking to the side and grinning at him. He smiles back in that way of his--the right side goes just a bit further up than the left side. It's a cute smile.
Fin suddenly grabs my hand, lacing our fingers together. I look down at our hands and then back up at him. His eyes are bright today, and he's not asking for permission on what he just did. And I'm fine with it.
We lie there like that on the bed for a while; our hands clasped between us; our heads side by side. Until Fin whispers, 'Let's go get some ice cream." I grin and reply, "Let's do it."
We spend the rest of the day arguing over which is better, rainbow sherbet or neapolitan.
And it's rainbow sherbet--just sayin'.
