Chayse and I walk down the halls, dodging the flow of students easily. When we pass the cafeteria I see Chayse eyeing the bloodbags hungrily and I pause. "Go on, get some," I say, pushing her lightly. She gives me a smile before walking up to the bags.
As I wait for Chayse I grab myself a bagel, leaning against the wall. The cafeteria is loud, as usual. People cram into the tables and sit in packs. Like dogs.
I'm suddenly yanked forward out the door and outside. My bagel falls from my hand as a small girl looks at me. Her hair is uncombed and knotty, and her skin is smeared with dirt. Her arms are lanky and long on her emancipated form. Her long fingernails dig into my arms as she hisses, "You have to watch your back, William. You aren't safe here...none of you are. SOS is crumbling, and you have to get your friends out of here. Quickly. Quickly!"
She has a skittish look in her shining brown eyes as she scrambles away from me, licking her lips over and over. "Be careful, okay? I won't be able to take another one dying." As she scurries away like a wild animal, I catch sight of her sharp teeth.
A werewolf. Interesting.
I walk back inside with a buzz of fear in my chest, grabbing a new bagel that doesn't taste like anything anymore.
Chayse skips up to me looking revived and happy. "C'mon, Will, let's go!" she exclaims, dragging me down the halls to the library.
We walk in and see that Abel and Akumu are there. "Where are Amber and Finley?" Chayse asks, plopping down on the sofa. The pair shrugs. Akumu replies, "We've been wondering the same thing for the past five minutes."
The library door opens just as we all get started and Amber runs in, her eyebrows drawn up in worry. "Hey, what's up? Where's Finley?" I call. She gets closer and I see tears in her eyes. "We were in my room, and we walked out to head down here, and he disappeared! I don't know where he went! I-I waited for him, but...he never came back. Where did he go?" She shakes, but the tears don't fall. I get the vibe that she doesn't cry often, so I stand up and walk over to her, putting my hands on her shoulders and leaning down to her height. "Listen to me," I say seriously. "We're going to find him. He couldn't have gotten far, yeah? He'll come up. You know he will."
She nods at me, but those tears are threatening to roll over. Quieter, so that only she'll hear, I whisper, "Don't think about him. Otherwise those tears are going to fall." She snaps her hand up to her eyes and wipes them away, pushing her glasses away. I let go of her and head back over to my spot beside Chayse.
