This prologue explains the "origin" of werewolfs in this book. It is not mandatory to read it to understand the story, although it would explain some details. So if you want, you can just go directly to chapter 1.

Artemis observed her children. They were beautiful, more than just humans, especially when they became majestic wolves. But something was wrong, has been wrong for quite a while. They were lonely creatures and with time one by one became aggressive, bloodthirsty and ruthless.
Wolves are truly breathtaking creatures, they worship the moon and are guide by it, just as she is, she wants her children to survive and prosper.
Watching the wolves Artemis thought of the solution, even wolves need society, brothers and sisters, they need a family, a pack, a system made to protect and provide. Wolves follow strength but force isn't everything, a leader should be strong and yet compassionate, firm but fair, confident but humble, and so on.
As Artemis thought of the list of qualities a leader should have, she realizes one cannot be all, so there must be two, a balance, an equilibrium, an Alpha and an Alpha Female, the Luna. So she picked the strongest wolves and made them leaders, and gave each wolf a mate, a soul who was made just for them, who would complement them, and even though fate would bring them together, she wanted her children to make their own choices, and sometimes those choices would come in the way of fate, and some mates would never find their way to each other, it sadden the Goddess but freewill was imperative.
As predicted the weaker wolves sought out the stronger ones, and packs were formed, those who refused to join a pack were then named rogues and perceived as incredibly dangerous.
The Goddess' work was done, the wolves would live on. Nonetheless, she was unhappy, she wanted to be a part of that and didn't like to see her children divided like that.
Thinking about her dilemma, the Goddess looked once again upon her children, and a lone she-wolf caught her attention, she was walking around the woods in the middle of the night, her fur reflected the beauty of the moon and her blue eyes look inside souls and brought them light. Intrigued because she didn't plan such a she-wolf, the Goddess got closer.
The wolf then became a young woman that look really concern, she picked something from the ground and in better observation it was a little bird, probably not old enough to fly fell from its nest. She nurtured the bird and, in her care, it grew stronger and flew away, she sat by the river bend and Artemis saw amazed how the nature around the girl took her in, as if she was a part of it.
Looking into the girl's soul Artemis realized she was special, pure, wise, kind, the real light in the darkness, her race could benefit greatly from her, but she also saw that her spirit was not one to be tamed, she was not a Luna.
She would not be restrained by an Alpha. She did not need one, she needed a partner, an equal but not in ways Lunas are equals to their mate, because this girl would not complement her mate, she would challenge him, and they would grow together. She was not a Luna she was an Alpha, all on her own, and maybe she was the bridge that Artemis needed, someone as special as this girl would be the perfect connection between them.
In that moment, Artemis appeared to the girl and revealed her thoughts. The girl was humbled by the Goddess and honored to be chosen as her spokeswoman. On that day was created the Artemis' Moon Pack, a pack that would always be led by strong independent females.
The Goddess smile at the girl and left, eager to see the future unfold. For when the others rule by force, the girl will lead by wisdom.
