The back porch was set up as if she was hosting a party and surprisingly she didn't pay any attention to it. She didn't brag about her cooking/baking, she didn't suggest anything to the guys. She just went and sat down, her back facing the yard. She was definitely acting different. In a good way I hope.
"Mom, all I ask from you during this is nothing but the truth and to understand. Because that's your best hope for you to keep my respect," I said sitting down across from her.
"By being truthful, we will have the best chance at helping Addeline," Nick said sitting down to my left. Zak was to my right and he placed his hand on my leg under the table, sending shivers through my body.
"He's right. The more we know and understand, the better chance we have of making this situation better than it is," Aaron said being brave and taking a seat next to my mom. Jay ended up sitting beside Aaron, and Billy in the other side of my mom.
"Well if I'm honest, that was the worst, most guilty moment of my life when I found you at the bottom of that hill in the creek," she said -no, confessed. She looked at her hands folded on the table, refusing to meet anyone's eyes. "You had made me upset, constantly asking about the fireworks, about the food, and that day your dad and I had fought. I was mad at him for buying you so many fireworks," she said, letting out a huff and shaking her head. Tears started to fall down her cheeks.
"I told you that we needed more wood for the fire, and sent you into the woods to get some somthay I wouldn't have to deal with your constant questions. You were really good at getting on my nerves," she said looking at me for a second. "Then it was about half an hour later, and I was getting worried. I didn't hear anything moving in the woods like I had moments before."
I stared to cry. I started to feel some of the pain that I had felt when I feel down that really steep hill. "I got your father and we called for you as loud as we could. When you didn't respond he ran back into the house to call the police while I started running through the woods looking for it. I was looking for about ten minutes when I came to the hill. I saw a big pile of sticks and that was when my stomach dropped. I knew something was wrong. I carefully walked down the hill and that's when I found you," she said, her voice cracking.
"What did you do, Mom?" I asked quietly, tears streaming down my face. We all were at the edge of our seats, waiting to hear what exactly she did.
"I kneeled down beside you in the creek and took you into my arms. You were so cold and I couldn't tell if it was from the creek or because you were gone that long. I cried and screamed, but you just layed there lifeless. I didn't know what to do. I asked for God to bring you back to me, but it was like he wasn't even listening."
She looked back down at her hands, not able to look at me as she continued to talk about what she did. "I begged for help from whatever would listen. You weren't even five yet, and I had such a hard time getting pregnant in the first place. I couldn't lose you." Mom stopped talking and I could tell she was hesitant about telling me -us- what she did.
"Then it was there. Standing behind one of the trees. I was crying so much that it looked like one big shadow of a man. It pointed at you and it was like I stopped breathing. All I could do was stare at it, and I whispered for it to help. It crept closer, and my heart was pounding, I felt sick. I knew it wasn't something good, but I was so desperate," she said shaking her head. "It kneeled down beside us, and it touched your chest, where your heart would be. And I was so scared. I was afraid that it was going to take all of you, but then you started breathing again."
"Mom, did it say anything?" I asked. Could it really have been silent the entire time?
She shook her head at me. "No, but I swear I saw it..." she said, almost refusing to say her next words.
"Saw it what?" Nick asked from beside me. I had forgotten that he was even there, entranced in my mother's confession. "What did you see it do Maddison?"
I watched as shivers went through my mom's body. "It smiled at her," she said staring at Nick. "And then it was gone. And it was almost like I had found her like that. When Jess found us, he was with the neighbor, Chett. He helped me stand up and Chett took her out of my hands."
It was like she was no longer explaining to me what happened, but to Nick. It made me upset, but at least she was talking about it, at least she wasn't hiding anything. At least it didn't seem like it. "They took her to the hospital, and she only had a minor concussion. The doctors said she was lucky because of all the scratches she had, they could tell she took quite a fall."
"You don't regret it at all?" Billy asked.
"No," Mom responded right away.
"Not even knowing that you could have saved her an awful lot of suffering? No regrets knowing how peaceful of a life she could be having in heaven right now?" Jay asked.
"I think that I was meant to do this. You guys just haven't seen it yet," she said defending herself. Then her eyes landed on Zak. "Yet, I have a feeling one of you already agree with that," she said, a smirk on her face. I could feel Zak tense up beside me, and I could feel the unease radiating off of him.
"Mom, that isn't the point," I say trying to take her attention from Zak.
"Maddison, I need to know, well we all do. Are you one hundred percent certain that this thing didn't say anything? That it didn't give any indication as to it's name?" Aaron asked.
"Aaron's right. If we knew who -well what- we were dealing with, that could help a whole lot," Jay said leaning forward in his chair.
"No, it didn't say a word that day. The only thing that happened after that could possibly be connected would be the ages of when the people Addy saw in her night terrors die, died."
"What does that mean?" Zak asked confused. He said finding my hand and squeezing it. Now I needed the comfort.
"Everyone who Addy would see killed, at the age they died, the end didget went back and forth between one and zero."
Imeadiately, making me jump, Nick pushed himself back and walked into the house. Aaron soon stood up and went after him. I looked at Zak, noticing how he was frozen.
"What did I say?" Mom asked turning to Billy and Jay.
"It's nothing that you need to worry about," Billy said placing his hand on Mom's shoulder. I could feel the worry from here.
I imeadiately stood up and walked into the house to find Aaron and Nick. "Guys?" I asked. The energy in the house felt strange and it was making me feel dizzy. I saw the front door open and Nick was sitting on the ground in front of the car, and Aaron was kneeling down next to him. "Guys, what am I not getting here?" I asked.
"Addeline, I think that you should ask Zak," Aaron said moving his eyes away from Nick. I could tell that he was concerned for his friend. But I was also upset
"What can Zak tell me that you guys can't? I asked a bit annoyed.
"Addy, please," Aaron said quietly.
"Fine," I said before dramatically turning away and heading to the back porch. I may have been acting like a kid, but so was Aaron in a way. When I got to the back porch, I saw that Zak was still where I had left him. I grabbed his arm and he stood to his feet. "Zak, I need to talk to you," I said half dragging him into the house.
Once we were in the kitchen, Zak imeadiately wrapped me in a hug and squeezed me tight. "Zak," I gasped. "Air," I said and as I started to push away, he loosened his grip on me.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his head burried between my neck and shoulders.
"Zak, I just want to know what has everyone so worried. Please tell me," I begged whining.
"We have seen this before," he whispered in my hair. "And it's not something good."
