"He did not say that!"
"He did, Ginny."
The two girls were in the Gryffindor common room the next day, as Hermione paced at the fireside.
"And muggle studies? Is that not his worst subject? I mean bloody hell he is a pure blood. Man doesn't know a thing about life without magic. It's how he was raised!" Ginny exclaimed.
"You are telling me. I smell a rat." Hermione said, sinking into a chair with the green tea Ginny had made her.
"I smell a pug."
"It's rude to say, but Pansy isn't smart enough to have done anything, Gin. She is awful at potions, struggles with learning new spells, and doesn't have a creative bone in her body. I am not sure what's up with Draco, but it's obviously of his own accord."
"Or agenda. He could be up to something."
"Well whatever it is I hope it ends quickly. I miss him, Ginny."
"I know, 'Mione. I know."
"Thank you for the tea. But I think I'm going to go up to my room to sleep in my own bed."
"Goodnight, 'Mione. Get some sleep."
Hermione made her way up to the common room. Ready for silk pajamas, and fluffy pillows. The caffeine in the tea had little effect, she was utterly exhausted.
She opened the door to the common room, and walked in to silence. It figured Draco was out again. Probably with Pansy she thought bitterly.
She was passing her bedroom door when she heard it. A soft, feminine, laugh. Hermione presses her ear to the door only to hear what she never wanted to.
"Draco, it's beautiful."
"I had it made for you third year. I always have know you were the girl for me."
"Ah yes third year. The year where Hermione punches you in the nose, and suddenly you lost interest in me." She heard Pansy say with annoyance.
"A phase. She was a challenge. You know I can't resist one. But you, Pansy, you were always loyal to me. Always there. It's only right that you be the girl I spend forever with."
Hermione felt her heart shatter. Feelings she hadn't dared to admit to herself were threatening to destroy her, but she listened on.
"Why the sudden change? You have ignored me for years." She inquired.
"Perhaps it was seeing you with the weasel. You can do so much better, Pans. You are so much more."
"Well what about you and Granger. You two have certainly been cozy."
"It's like I said. She was impossible to get. But then she wasn't, but what we had isn't real. I don't care about her. I love you."
"There is an easy way to prove it to me. You know how. It's just one word."
"Pansy, dear, you don't have to bait me. You know the mud blood means nothing to me." Draco said, his voice echoing no true emotion.
Hermione had heard enough. Letting out a small sob, she rain ran to her bedroom.
Pansy smiled at her new love, sickeningly.
"Oh I know. I just wanted to hear you say it for me."
