Chapter one :

Shane's pov 8.15am

For the first time in weeks, walking up the steps and into the entrance of the school wasn't something I immediately regretted.

Nothing can can me down, not the chilly air or the judgy looks or the chatter.  I  have found someone on my side, it doesn't hurt that it's a pretty girl either.

Proceeding to my locker with a hint of a smile which grew into a grin when I saw my new ally waiting for me. Scarlett was leaning up against my locker. Her light chocolate-brown hair draped over her shoulders and lashing across her white school blouse. She was wearing dark blue skinnys with brown knee-high laced up boots. Her grey eyes smiling as they landed on me.

"Hey there friend." Scarlett's voice was soft and steady. Whenever she spoke, I've noticed,  it was always done in a very articulate and paced manner. This paired with her melodic tone made her someone very easy to listen to, the type of voice you hear on the radio or the seven 'o' clock news.

She moves aside so that I am able to open my locker.

"Hey, you're here early.'' I reply as I lift my backpack off my shoulders and jam it into my locker.

"Yeah, it's a weird change for me actually." She pauses for a moment, her eyes trailing through the contents of my locker, brimming with curiosity.

Finally she speaks again, just as I'm about to close the door.

"Whats that?''

I frown, confused as to what she could be refering to.

''Whats what?'' I question.

Scarlett Points to a small fabric box in my locker.

"Oh nothing" I shrug hoping to dismiss the matter. One look at Scarlett's perfectly arched eyebrow however, I know she is not going to let this go.

"It's just something I got for Cynthia."

"May I see?" Scarlett's brown eyes dig into mine with the kind of determination a tsunami has when plunging over a village.

With a loud groan I move aside and allow her to dig into my locker.

She gently prys the small blue box open. Once opened , an untouched necklace appeared in all it's glory. The colour of sea after a storm , with the sparkle or a star in the night. Scarlett gasps.

"Cynthia saw it in a jewelry store on our first date, well I say date, we were just hanging out at the mall, but anyway, she didn't say anything but I knew she wanted it, the way she stared at it, almost memorized, kinda like how you are now." I joke. Scarlett sends me a sharp glare, for which I chose to ignore and continue speaking instead. " I was going to give it to her over dinner, on our one year anniversary but she never showed up.'' Scarlett's eye's widen.

''Because She cheated on you?''

I glance at her in surprise. Her wits are impeccable. I find it irritating.

''It does not matter anymore.'' I pause for a moment. I want be rid of that box. I wasn't ready to do it before, but now the last thing I need is to be reminded of how foolish I was, once I get rid of this, the only thing to tell me I'm an air-head is my brother.

''Get rid of it for me, please?'' I could feel the pain in my chest again and swallow down hard.

Scarlett on the other hand seems drained of emotion, he face holds no compassion or empathy, not as if she didn't care but almost as if she could not care.
