Melissa

"He's not waking up"- I tell miss Barbara. While staring at the little boy in my bed.

Hes been unconscious for more than half an hour. Which worries me, alot.

Miss Barbara, stood by me, helping me take care of him. We had taken his clothes off, and Barbara brought some of her son's old clothes which she had kept, they were a little big, but it was better than nothing, all of the clothes that were inside his bag, were dreanched.

"It's normal, I'm sure he will wake up any minute now."- As soon as she says that, the boy wakes up frightened, coughing repeatedly.

"Calm down sweetie."- Barbara helps him to sit, and he leans against the headboard and looks around the room, evidently confused. Maybe he's trying to recognize something.

"How are you feeling?"- I ask. -"It took a while for you to wake up, we were worried."-

"I ... I think I'm okay."- He answers, but begins to cough again to get the rest of the water out of his lungs.

"Now that I'm sure you're okay, I better go back home, keep me updated Mel. And you"- Barbara turns to the boy sitting on my bed. -"Try to eat all of the soup I made."- She says and walks away leaving us alone.

"Here, eat it while it's still warm, it will be good for you, since you were frozen a couple of minutes ago."- I place the tray on his lap. He stares at the soup, but soon picks up the spoon and begins to eat. He must be starving.

"What's your name?"- I can't contain my curiosity. I don't wait until he finishes the soup and I start with my interratory.

"My name?"

"Yes, your name, mine is Melissa. And what's yours?"-

"I don't know... I.. don't remember, but i think it's Cristiano?"

"Cristiano? Oh what a beautiful name."-I sit on the edge of the bed and watch him eat.

"And what were you doing near the water if you don't know how to swim?"

"I can't swim,"- He replies, his answers are extremely vague.

"Well I noticed that."- I giggle. -"Where are you from?"

"I.. don't remember"

"You don't remember? But are you from Madrid?"

"Madrid?"- He's so confused.

"Yes, that's where we are now. But your accent does not seem to be from here.

"I think I'm Portuguese, I remember speaking portuguese at home"- I'm surprised.

"Oh really, my sister and I are also Portuguese - I state in my language.

"Are you my mum?"

Mum? Is he delirious?

"No, I'm not, I'm your friend. Your mother must be looking for you right now."

"She is?"

"Of course she is, a boy as sweet as you, she must be losing her mind. Who are your parents?"

"I don't know, I don't think I remember..."- He stares at the wall and shakes his head, must be trying to bring his mind back to normal. He makes a puzzled expression, and I begin to think that he really does not remember anything.

Oh my God!

"Cristiano, do you remember anything before you fell into that river?"- I ask in agony.

He was going to put the spoon in his mouth but he left the cutlery in the air. He wonders for a little, but soon his eyes widen, and he just shakes his head in denial.

Did he really lose his memory? Poor thing. I cover my mouth without realizing it.

He must have hit his head or something, the ravine was really high, the fall must have caused this loss of memory.

"Oh my dear, it's okay, I'll help you get back to your family. Do you want to stay here with me for now?"-

"Yes, I think."- He looks down on his plate again and continues to eat.

"Is he going to stay with us Isa?"- My sister, who surprisingly had been silent until now, asks.

"I think so"- I give her a smile, while shrugging my shoulders. I really don't know if I'm doing the correct thing, but what else am I supposed to do? Report him to the police? That seems like the most sane thing to do. But I want to know the entire story first. He had a bag filled with clothes? Was he perhaps running away? I don't know.

...

I wake up with my natural alarm clock, and with the help of the window's clarity. I ended up making an improvised bed on the floor, and let those two sleep on the bed, there was just no way we would all fit in that tiny bed.

And yes, I could have gone and slept on the sofa, but my sister is afraid of the dark, she can only sleep if I'm by her side.

I eventually get up, and stretch, listening to the crack of my spine, this is really uncomfortable.

I walk over to the window closing the curtain. So I could let them sleep for a little while longer since it's saturday. But when I look at the bed, I only spot my sleeping sister.

Soon a desperation consumes me, did Cristiano run away? But as soon as I exit my room, I sigh in relief. The boy was sitting on the couch, staring at me as his feet swayed in the air.

"You're up early, are you hungry?"-

"Yes, very hungry. I could eat an elephant."

"Unfortunately, I don't think an elephant would fit in your belly."- I reply with the same playful tone as him.

Cristiano surprised me during these past few days he stayed with us, at first he was quite timid, but as time went by, we began to act like we knew each other for a very long time, he doesn't remember anything besides his name, but still doesn't complain about anything.
Soon after, Clary joined us.

"Good morning, princess."- I kiss her cheek, and she laughs cutely.

"Good morning Mel, good morning, Cristiano."- She walks up to the boy, and kisses his cheek as well. And I notice a slight blush on his face. Children. I shake my head slightly laughing.

"Good morning Clary"- He responds.

"Did you two sleep well?"- I ask, And the two don't even take their eyes off their bowl, they slimply nod.

I hear a knock on the door, and make my way to it, opening it, finding Miss Barbara outside holding a cake, I warmly smile.

"Come in"- I take hold of the cake, and give her a kiss.

"Where are those two?"- I point at them, they were so distracted that they hadn't even seen who had arrived.

Cristiano had also started to really like Miss Barbara, she tells us the best stories, and obviously, she's just the most gentle person I have ever met, it's impossible not to like her.

Once they realised she was there, they immediately jumped out of their seats, and embraced Miss Barbara in a hug.

"Guess what I brought for you two?"- They look puzzled and curious, and she points at the cake which I was holding by the counter. After cutting a piece for both of them, I sit down with Barbara.

"So, still no information about his parents or where he's from?"- I shake my head.

"He can't remember anything, and there was nothing useful inside his bag, only clothes and a book, not even one single picture. It's going to be impossible to take him back home."- I run my fingers through my hair in frustration.

"Calm down, there has to be way, don't worry."

"I just don't understand why he would be alone in the streets at that time, and with a bag full of clothes, it just doesn't add up, maybe his parents are in fact problematic, maybe he was trying to run away from home."- This whole situation is confusing. And I still haven't been able to find a job. And next week I need to pay the rent, which I have no idea how I'm going to do so.
