Today is the fun fair. Every year the orphanage has an adoption fair open to the public and all the orphans have to take part in it. Everyone is running a stall and Lola and I are running the apple bob. Lola and I stand side by side, still and silent; we are scared that someone will want us. We don't want new families.
A young boy with jet black hair and emerald eyes walks up to our stand, he can't be more than sixteen years old.
"How much?" he asks, his voice soft as feathers.
Lola pipes up, "three pounds fifty pence please." she says with a dashing smile of perfectly straight teeth.
Suddenly his green eyes shift to me, "What's your name?" he asks.
Lola pipes up again thankfully, "I'm Lola and this is Maria."
He looks at me with an odd expression on his face, his eyebrows creased in confusion. Then his face breaks into a smile and his eyes shine in the light. He holds out his hand for me to shake.
"I'm Cason. Nice to meet you." he says, a smile still playing on his lips.
I reach for his hand and take it, smiling and blushing but still saying nothing. Then realisation dawns on his face and his eyes widen in disbelief.
"You're a mute aren't you?" he asks. I let go of his hand and it drops to his side Now it's my turn to look confused. Is it really that obvious? How could he tell?
Thankfully, Lola notices my discomfort and coughs, "Erm, three pounds and fifty pence please."
His eyes are still on me when he leans in and whispers something in my ear.
"I used to be one too." Then he walks away without paying, leaving me dazed and wondering...
