I closed my mouth and spoke to you in a hundred different ways.
Lola has this amazingly simple idea, she has finally given me another way to communicate- sign language.
A while ago, I met this girl online called Laura, she was mute too and when we got talking she told me that she couldn't speak because she had a condition called Mutism. Instead of verbal communication, she learnt sign language. I thought at the time that being mute meant deciding to be mute, I didn't realise that some people don't have the choice. Laura was one of the few people that made me want to speak again, it was because I had that choice and her and many others didn't. It was stupid but I felt like I owed it to her, I felt like I owed my voice to her because she wanted one and I didn't. Laura was also all about equality between men and women- she was a feminist an her favourite quote was by Audre Lorde;
"Your silence will not protect you." personally I disagree but I can see why she loves it so much.
Lola and I have already started learning sign language, it's a bit hard to remember at first but after the first hurdle it's just like learning another language. I know the alphabet and how to say simple things like hello and thank you and goodbye. Lola thinks that soon we'll be able to say anything because all the hand signals are repeated as letters and phrases; maybe I'll get my voice back- in some form anyway.
