Katniss' POV
As soon as my arrow rips through Cato's torn body, a cannon fires and the victory trumpets blare. My momentary doubt vanishes as I pull Peeta into me, using everything I have not to weep into his chest.

I'm finally home and safe. There are no mutts, no arenas, no interviews. I should be at peace, but instead I'm running my hands through my knotted hair, trying to figure out what to say to Peeta. Haymitch made it very clear that tonight will be the only night I'm free from the cameras for a long time. So, I reluctantly tell Prim good night and head to my room, presumably my bed. Only I know where I will be at midnight.
It was a bit past midnight when I knock on Peeta's door. I prepared for the possibility that he wouldn't answer. After all, he had nothing to feel guilty for. He didn't break anyone's heart or intentionally kill anyone like I did. But he opened the door right away.
"Katniss." Peeta's face changes from shock to relief to sadness.
"Peeta," I reply softly.
He escorts me inside, sitting down on the couch. "I'm glad you came here." He looks like he's going to reach for my hand, but he doesn't. "I've been thinking. You deserve an apology. You saved me. You saved us. It's not right of me to hold you to whatever you said in the games," He pauses. "But I can't go on acting for the cameras and then just ignoring each other in real life. So if you could stop looking at me like I'm wounded, I can quit acting like it."
"And then maybe," he continues. "We have a shot at being friends."
"I've never been very good at friends," I say. I thought I was friends with Gale but after he kissed me, I don't know. I didn't even know Madge and I were friends until she gave me the Mockingjay pin.
"Well, let's start simple. What's your favorite color?"
Well we know how that conversation goes :) This chapter is just a prologue to establish what's going on and how Katniss and Peeta's relationship is going to be. The first five chapters I wrote about two years ago, so they're going to be much messier than the ones after that, which I'm writing right now in 2020.
