Her eyes

I saw it in her eyes.

Young and yet so wise.

She hated it.

She loved him.

Hated them.

She scared because of them

Afraid she'll come home to running booze

Afraid she'll find him with broken glass in his skin.

She grew up to fast.

Only 16 and already working to pay the bills.

Hoping that while she was gone her mom won't pull out the pills

10 hours maybe more. Begging to have that extra shift.

They pitied and so they let her,

She won't live down the stares.

All the customers who've been "miffed"

She did it for him.

And she was glad that she came home laughter

The little boy didn't need to grow up, not yet.

She had time for a game or two

He asked for more but her bed called her name

The sister worked till she was ready to pass out.

She had no time for fun and games.

2 years now. She's turning 18.

He's older now.

Wiser now.

He's caught on to what she hid.

He was mad at all the secrets

He ran out the door.

Never came back.

Her parents wasted away on the couch.

They heard the scream

the sobs, the shout

the hazed cleared

And finally, they were sober

Oops, too late

She's not that little girl that you remember

She's smarter

Older

Wiser.

And she has friends who can dig a hole 6 feet under.

Better run. Better hide.

No escape

The last thing they saw was her eyes

Wild

Red

Wide

Broken.
