It was now time for Jaylynn and Brooke to leave their safe bubble of home. All their belongings that they both valued and needed were neatly packed into their suitcases. The house was immaculate, just like their mother always liked it.
Jaylynn felt a sense of pride since she has taken real responsibility for things. What she didn't have pride in tho was how she had left her mother's body. She would have liked that her mother would have been appropriately buried or even cremated at that, but at the moment, she didn't exactly have a say in the matter. Time was pressed against them, so while her sister wasn't looking, she dragged their mother into her restroom, where Jaylynn cleaned her up a bit, trying to at least make their mother look presentable.
She lit some incense in the restroom, to mask the emitting odor from the body, said a silent prayer, and closed the restroom door. After that, she quickly mopped up the blood that was somehow turning green in color. She breathed a massive sigh of relief as the easy part was now finished.
In this present moment, however, the reality of the situation was beginning to sink its fangs into Jaylynn's body. The pressure of an adult weighed down on her.
Could she keep her sister safe?
Where would they go?
Who to turn to since no adults are present, let alone alive?
Brooke poked her sister in the side and said, "Jay, you good?"
Jaylynn was startled at first but regained her composure and replied, "Yeah, I'm fine. Don't poke me again," she said with a glare.
"Well, it ain't my fault you were in la la land!" Brooke replied with a huff and scrunched up eyebrows.
"Ok, and? You could have called my name or some'in," Jaylynn unlocked the side door and looked out the storm door and was met with a continuing darkening sky. Her eyebrows were pushed together from her worried expression that had made its way to her face.
"What's wrong?" Brooke asked, looking a little concerned for her sister.
"Looks like it might storm soon," Jaylynn turned around and quickly grabbed her suitcase and rushed to open the door. "We need to go. Now." Her sister followed Jaylynn's example and grabbed her suitcase as well.
As soon as the sister stepped out into the new world that wasn't what they had once known, they were greeted with the smell of sewage and death. Jaylynn quickly gagged and covered her mouth with her shirt while Brooke shoved her face into her elbow. The eldest sister looked around at her surroundings, and she saw what looked like the world had gone dull.
Jaylynn felt around in her pocket for the car keys, but she didn't make contact them. She felt all over her pants pockets, but she didn't feel a thing. Maybe she had left them in the house? She looked over at her sister and said, "Stay here and pay attention to your surroundings." Her sister nodded in agreement.
Jaylynn quickly rushed into the house to look for the car keys as she didn't want to leave her sister alone outside like that for long. She heard something from outside, and it sounded like a muffled hum of some sort. Worry struck Jaylynn in the heart as she feared for the worst. She finally found the car keys on the kitchen table. She rushed over to a counter and grabbed the biggest knife in the knife holder.
She dashed to the door and pushed it open to find a diseased adult had taken hold of her sister.
