Pippa had been deaf all of her life. She was born deaf, and she's lived with it. That didn't stop her from being an absolute ball of sunshine. And now, she has met Lin, her boyfriend. He showed her what a relationship could do; how impactful it could be. Within the two week span of their first meeting (a blind date set up by one of their friends, Tommy), to their second, Lin had learned enough sign language to be able to hold a conversation with Pippa. By now, roughly a year and a half later, he's fluent in sign language, and he learned all of that for Pippa.

My goodness, did she love him?

It was late August when Lin was sitting down with Pippa, telling her all about this great idea he had.

"So, it's all about this wild set of three days in Washington Heights. And--And the backdrop is going to look like that!" Lin pointed out the window towards their beautiful view of the Washington bridge. Pippa could tell that he was really excited about this, especially by the twinkle in his eye. How fast his fingers were moving were pretty much a dead give away as well.

"That sounds amazing, Love!" Pippa smiled.

"Thank you. I'd be even more excited if I could figure any of the music out." Lin half frowned and looked over at the piano across the room.

"You're a genius, you'll figure it out!" Pippa grabbed his hand and kissed the back of it.

"Hey! That's my job!" Lin chuckled and peppered kisses all over Pippa's knuckles and hand, even beginning to trail his kisses up her wrist. Pippa laughed her laugh that was like music to Lin's ears. And it broke his heart to think that even if she'd be able to hear it, she wouldn't think it is as pretty as he does.

Jump ahead a few months...

In The Heights had gotten a title, and was starting to take on a musical skeleton. Pippa had started blueprints on a book she was planning on publishing. She had published a few books in the past - one even being awarded as a New York Times Best Seller - but it had been a while since she'd worked on anything else, so she was excited to get back into the swing of writing her story and sipping a mug of tea in the evenings.

Pippa had been writing for a while, she could tell when she had gotten up to make herself another mug of tea. Knowing it took herself forever to drink a full mug while focused on her writing, meaning that much time had passed, Pippa went to go check on Lin in the other room.

She walked into the room and sighed at the view of Lin, sitting on the piano bench, crumpled up pieces of handwritten sheet music sprawled around his feet, and his hands still resting on a couple of the ivory keys. Pippa quietly walked over and sat on the bench beside him. She leant over and kissed the side of his head, causing Lin to snap out of his thoughts and looked up.

"Scared me a bit, there." Lin signed. He kissed her lips for a brief moment before leaning his head into one of his hands.

"Sorry about that. Are you doing okay?" Pippa tilted her head.

"I mean, I'm not the best. I can't get this song to sound right."

Pippa thought for a moment before letting her fingers move. "Play it for me."

Lin chuckled a bit. "Love, you won't be able to--"

"Please?" Pippa made puppy dog eyes at Lin.

"Well, if you're going to look at me like that..." He chuckled before resting his hands on the correct keys, according to the scribbles displayed in front of him.

Sure, Pippa couldn't hear the music, but she was completely in love with the look of his hands dancing across the keys. She smiled as he finished, his fingers playfully striking a few close keys in a dizzying pattern, something Pippa was sure made a pretty sound. She clapped as Lin set his hands down, one hand landing on her left knee. "That sounded beautiful." Pippa playfully winked.

Lin chuckled. "Thanks, Sunshine." He kissed her cheek.

"Sunshine? That's a new one."

"Well, you always know how to brighten my day. So, your new name is Sunshine." Lin smiled.

"I have no problems with that." Pippa smiled even bigger than Lin, and even brighter than the sun that had now set over the Heights.
