A Hamliza modern-ish AU

Alex took his glasses off of his face, running his hands over his eyes. After setting them down onto his desk with a gentle clink, he began to venture around the home, looking for his wife.

"Eliza?" Alex called, peering all around the home, looking for her. "Liza?" He called out her nickname once he reached their closed bedroom door. After leaning closer, Alex realized that he could hear that Eliza was crying. He quickly pushed open the door.

"Go away, Alex." Eliza mumbled, wiping away her tears with her sleeve.

"Nope." Alex sat beside Eliza on the bed. "What's the matter?"

Eliza pushed out of the hug that Alex wrapped her in, standing up and padding towards the bathroom.

"No, Ma'am." Alex stopped Eliza just before she got to the bathroom. He gently pulled her back to their bedroom. "What is the matter, Honey, why are you crying?"

"It's stupid." She muttered, hiding her face.

Alex frowned. "Hey." He lifted her chin with a couple fingers. "Don't play these games with me."

"I'm not playing any games." Eliza whispered.

Alex chuckled gently. "Yes, you are, and I know that because this is my game."

Eliza sighed, sinking into Alex's gentle hold on her. "It's been months...why can't I get over it?"

Alex's face fell. "Oh, Baby..." He sighed. "Baby, you've...we've been through a lot in the past few months."

Eliza sniffled. "But I should be okay now, it's been almost half a year!"

"Elizabeth Hamilton, you need to understand that your heart's taken quite the beating. It's okay to not be okay still. You lost a father, and a baby, all in one month."

"I can't help but wonder if it's all my fault." Eliza whispered.

"Eliza, no." Alex tried to stop her, but her mind was still spiraling.

"I-I was so stressed, with Father, and the service. And all the travel. And my sisters. I was so stressed, and I wasn't eating right, and-"

"Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, stop saying that right now!" Alex snapped, making Eliza wince in fear. She'd never seen him like this. "You heard the doctor, this miscarriage was not your fault."

She sniffled gently, her flushed cheeks and glassed over eyes fully facing her husband.

"C'mere." Alex whispered, wrapping her in a tighter hug and laying her down. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "Would you lay with me for a minute? Just a moment?"

"Just a moment." Eliza agreed, yet twenty minutes later, the two were fast asleep in each other's arms, working on mending a heart.
