In a Hamliza mood today...so enjoy!
Their relationship had slowly but surely made it's way to being a pile of shambles. It was once a wall that stood tall, but now, the wall had completely fallen. The enemies had gotten inside, and the secret had gotten out, well, only to a few people. Nobody really that important, but people did know. People did know that there had been a few fights behind the drawn curtains of their little place in Harlem. People did know that Eliza was lying when she explained, "how great" the relationship was going. People did know that she had started praying more for Alexander's own sanity, rather than her's.
Angelica paid a visit over to the Hamilton's, one night after a fight just like the ones described. This fight ended with Alexander slamming the door, and a few tears being shed. Eliza knew he was going out with Laurens post that fight. She knew Laurens was the friend he'd call up after an argument like this, then they'd both get drunk for reasons somewhere between forgetting the stresses at work, and in Alexander's case, forgetting this fight. From there, he'd stumble home drunk, and for whatever reason, Eliza would always take care of him. No matter what he said to her only hours before, she always would.
The point of the matter is that if one person was completely naive to this whole relationship, it was Angelica (and Peggy, of course).
"What's wrong, 'Liza?" Angelica turned to her sister, after she had walked into her sister's home. It was almost like she could see that the last of the color in Eliza's face hadn't come back yet, post fight.
"What do you mean?" Eliza asked, smoothing down the plain skirt she had on. She needed to do something with her hands.
"I mean, what's wrong? Are you feeling alright, Dear?" Angelica pressed her hand against Eliza's forehead and cheeks.
"What is wrong with you?!"
"I feel fine." Eliza said, taking her sister's hand away from her.
The room fell into a blurry silence after that. Angelica was still confused as to what was obviously bothering her younger sister. "Where is Alexander?"
"I can't stand this anymore!"
"Probably off drunk somewhere." Eliza muttered, as she set the table, not even thinking twice about what she said. That was until she actually said it. Her eyes widened. "No, no, I didn't mean--"
"Eliza..." Angelica's voice faded off. "What...what do you mean?"
"I didn't mean anything, I just--" Eliza rambled off, trying to fix this.
"You can't make up for what you said!"
"No." Angelica took the forks from Eliza's hand, and sat her down in one of the chairs. "How often is Alexander drinking?"
Eliza's eyes dropped to her lap. There was no point in lying now. "Every time we get into a fight."
"Do you even love me, Elizabeth?!"
"How often is that, 'Liza?"
"It depends." Eliza sighed.
"Were you two fighting before I came?" Angelica grabbed her sister's hand.
Instantly, all the color drained from Eliza's face. "Maybe."
"I don't know."
