Rational Thought

Rational thought is the idea that we all have goals, purposes and values that underlie our attempts to be happy and satisfied

If we think, feel and behave in ways that facilitate the pursuit of these goals, we act self-helpfully

Beliefs that are related to the acquisition of our goals and/or that are flexible, non-extream, and logical (i.e. consistent with reality) are what could be termed rational

"Rational beliefs bring us closer to getting good results in the real world."

(Albert Ellis)

People act irrationally or self-defeating when they sabotage the acquisition of goals

Froggatt (2005): Irrational Beliefs

- block achievement of goals

- create extreme emotions

- distort reality

-are illogical ways of evaluating ourselves, others and the world

-negatively affect our lives

- Tend to be rigid, extreme and illogical

Rational-Emotional Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

Developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950's

An action-orientated therapeutic approach that aims to inspire emotional growth

The main purpose of REBT is to identify self-defeating or irrational beliefs and replace them with rational ones

It teaches individuals to take responsibility for their own emotions

It seeks to empower people to change and overcome unhealthy behaviours and thoughts
