"Nervous?" C asks, coming to stand beside me. I laugh nervously.
"Me? Nervous? Never. It's not like it's my first competition as a Prima since freshman year, my first competition as Prima dance captain, and the first time my choreography is being judged," I let out in a panicked rush.
"Woah there V. Take a deep breath, everything will be fine," Beckett tells me, trying to calm me down.
"Yeah. Everything will be fine. What's the worst that could happen?" I reply nervously.
"Exact-"
"I could forget the choreo, mess up the entire dance, cause the primas to lose our first competition, make your mom hate me, and get expelled from Keaton!" I finish. Beckett takes a breath, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"C. You've known her longer. She's your problem," he states. C drops her mouth in protest.
"You're her boyfriend!" She argues.
"You're her best friend!" Beckett responds.
"Enough! Pull yourself together V! Cassandra chose you to be Prima captain for a reason, you will do fine!" Mindy exclaims walking into the midst of my melt down.
"Now come on! Helsweel wants to talk to us," she tells us, herding us into the hallway. Twelve of us gather in the hallway around Ms. Helsweel, waiting for her to speak.
"Well. You've all made it this far, don't fail now," she tells us before ushering us back stage. When we get to the wing we form a small huddle.
"Okay guys, we've put hours of training into this performance, we're gonna do great. We can't let Helsweel or Keaton down now," I whisper. The group on stage finishes their routine.
"Keaton on three. One, two, three, Keaton!" We chant together. We step out onto the stage and the spot lights hit us. I find the judge's table before getting lost in the routine. Our performance runs without any problems or mistakes. Helsweel is waiting for us in the wing as soon as we walk off the stage.
"Well. I suppose that wasn't awful," she decides, giving us a short nod. She turns to me and Beckett.
"You two, back to the dressing rooms, we'll rehearse in five," She orders. Beckett and I immediately make a beeline to the dressing rooms. I change into my new costume as quickly as possible before meeting Helsweel and Beckett in an empty corridor for last minute corrections rehearsal. We run through our duet three times before Helsweel seems satisfied.
"Don't disappoint me," she says before we leave to head backstage.
"Ya know, at home, when I beg her to give us a duet, I didn't mean a week before the IMADs," Beckett grumbles. I snort.
"This is your mother we're talking about, what did you expect?" I ask.
"Act number 708, we're ready for you," one of the stage crew says. Beckett and I make our way up to the stage, waiting for our cue. Right before we're about to run out, Beckett leans down and plants a kiss on my lips.
"We got this," he whispers before stepping out onto the stage. I follow close behind as we preform our routine flawlessly. The duet is over before I know it, and I'm practically glowing. The moment we step off stage, Beckett is twirling me around in the air.
"You two killed it!" C exclaims, running up to us, a huge grin plastered across her face.
"You two are totally going to win the duets!" Mindy adds. I open my mouth to reply when Ms. Helsweel appears behind C and Mindy. The two immediately notice my change in expression and turn to look behind them. Helsweel's face is completely blank and the four of us stare down at the floor. Suddenly, Beckett and I are squeezed together as Helsweel hugs us. For a moment I'm completely frozen in shock at the idea of Ms. Helsweel hugging me outside of her home, but I'm quick to respond, hugging her back.
"I am so proud of you two," she tells us, releasing us from her embrace. Beckett and I look at each other before Beckett quickly embraces me. Helsweel regains her composure,
"Yes well, ready yourselves for the award ceremony," she directs, walking away quickly. C and Mindy look at us in alarm. O.M.G C mouths to me. I know right? I mouth back before hurrying back to our dressing room with Beckett.
