"And our runner up for mixed quartets, second place, is 'Moonlight' from Adagio School of the Arts with a score of 91!" Durani announces into the microphone. Mindy's quartet had already placed fourth. I grip Beckett's arm tightly.
"C's group either took first, or didn't place at all," I whisper nervously. Beckett sighs.
"I'd be willing to bet a good amount of money that C and her group took first place," Beckett tells me.
"And our first place quartet, with an almost perfect score of 97, 'Hype' from Keaton School of the Arts!" Durani announces.
"Yes C!" I shout, jumping up and down in excitement as the crowd applauses. Beckett just laughs, pulling me into a hug and placing a kiss on the top of my head.
"We're up next," he mumbles into my hair.
"Okay lover boy, let's go," Miles says from behind us. We walk on stage with the rest of the trios, switching places with the quartet groups. I give C a thumbs up as we pass. When we all get situated on stage, I take hold of Beckett and Miles' hands and squeeze out my nerves. Both boys wince.
"For our mixed trios, I'm going to start with our fourth runner up, 'Star Struck' from Winnipeg Arts," Durani says into the mic. He proceeds on with third runner up, second runner up, and second place. I can literally see myself shaking, and at this point, I've probably cut off all circulation going into Beckett and Miles' hands. Laci's group hasn't been called either yet, as if the situation couldn't be any more tense.
"And our first place mixed trio, with the highest score of the night so far," Durani pauses for suspense.
"'Blink' from Keaton School of the Arts!" He announces. The audience bursts into applause. I feel like I'm frozen from shock until Beckett pulls me into a tight embrace before picking me up and spinning me around. Miles hugs me next as soon as my feet hit the ground.
"Guys!" I exclaim. Before I can say anything else however, a boy from the audience jumps up on stage and grabs the mic from Durani's hand.
"Now I don't mean to be disrespectful here, but, Adagio's trio here. Laci's group, had one of the best routines at this entire competition. The entire, competition," he states before jumping back into the crowd.
"Sorry, but this isn't the VMAs," Durani says, once the mic is returned to him. The crowd lets out a nervous laugh.
"Congratulations you three," he says, handing us our trophy. As soon as we're off stage, Miles disappears to join his friends, and C, Sasha, Jenna, and Mindy pounce on us.
"Guys we totally killed it this year!" Sasha says with a grin.
"And Keaton is def gonna take first in the school wide comp. We have the first place win in Mixed Quartets and Trios!" Jenna adds.
"Excuse me," a voice from behind says. I turn around to see Lena, the Juilliard scout standing behind us with a small smile on her face.
"Vanessa, Beckett, congratulations. You had a phenomenal performance today, and we can't wait to have you at Juilliard," she tells us.
"Thank you," Beckett and I say together. From the corner of my eye, I see C shrink back.
"As wonderful as it was to see you two perform again today, I'm actually here to speak with Carly," Lena continues.
"Of coarse. It was really nice seeing you," I say with a smile, giving C a small shove forward, applauding her in my mind.
"Hi, Ms. Helsweel!" I chirp happily as I see her make her way through the crowd. Without a word, she embraces both me and Beckett, something she'd normally only do at home. I definitely like this Helsweel better than the raging dance teacher. After talking to what seems like a million people, and receiving countless congratulations, Beckett and I finally make it back to the safety of the dressing rooms.
"Ya know, now that it's over, I'm kind of sad we don't get to work on these routines anymore. Or work with the music and art kids," I say.
"Yeah, but there's always the Prima choreography. And the winter recital," Beckett reminds me, causing me to freeze in horror.
"Oh no. I haven't started choreographing the winter recital. I haven't even looked at the theme," I realize in horror. Beckett, once again, just laughs at me.
"I'm sure we can pull something together V," he says.
