"Welcome to Canada".

Those words were the first thing Kara heard as she stepped into her new life, her very first time being truly free. Alongside Alice and Luther, she left customs and looked out over the new world before her.

Snow fell softly onto the pavement, creating a white dusting on the trees and grass. All around, families departed and went their separate ways to safety and freedom from the civil war they left behind in America. Overwhelmed, Kara slowly sank to her knees. A single, joyful tear fell onto her cheek. Alice joined her in the ground and hugged her tightly, and Luther rubbed her shoulder in comfort.

"We did it, Alice", Kara whispered. "We're finally safe".

Alice smiled up at Kara, pure happiness in her gaze. Luther smiled, too, silently noting that this was the second time he'd seen Alice smile. Hopefully, he thought, it wouldn't be the last.

After a couple more minutes of hugging, thinking, and just *being*, the family finally got up and moved away from the building behind them. They had another bus to catch, after all. Rose's brother was in Ontario a little while away from where they were, and he was expecting them within the next day or so.

Kara led the way to the nearest bus stop, using a small map she had found of the city back in customs. They didn't need a ticket this time; if you had made it past security, you must be trustworthy enough to ride without a ticket, right? Luther boarded the bus first, with Kara and Alice following close behind. The family chose their seat near the back so as not to be disturbed by anyone else boarding.

Kara sat in the middle seat, with Alice by the window. As the vehicle rolled away, Alice stared out the window the whole time, taking in every new sight that flew past them.

The time passed by quickly. Before they knew it, the bus stop rolled into view. Kara smiled down at Alice when they stepped off. She smiled reassuringly and said, "Don't worry, we're almost there. Just a few blocks away is the house".

And so they walked. Luther carried Alice on his shoulders for a bit, allowing her to get a good look at the buildings and people around them. Kara thought about plans for the future. Where would Alice go to school- if she even went? Would they purchase a home of their own one day? Could Kara get a job to support her new family? Could they even pass off as a real, human family?

Her worries and troubled thoughts melted away as they came into view of the house. Alice was set gently back into the ground, and they all took in the house before them. It was small, yet quaint, with little flower boxes in the windows and a swing on the porch. Kara approached the front door and knocked quietly, surprised when it opened almost immediately. A middle aged man with a pair of reading glasses on top of his head answered with a small smile.

" You must be Kara! Welcome, welcome! Rose told me you guys were coming. Want to come inside? She told me to remind you to call her as soon as you get here", the man said.

Kara nodded with a smile too, and looked back at Luther and Alice. As they stepped inside the pleasantly warm house, she knew that no matter how many questions there were for the future, one thing was certain in the present- they were finally home.
