Tilting his head back, Gavin Reed drained the last drops of his coffee, letting the cup sail into the trash can from across the room with an impressive toss. He sighed, rather dramatically, and leaned far back into his desk chair. He propped his feet up on the desk as he absent mindedly scrolled through a few files on his computer. Murder, theft, vandalism, all rushing past his unseeing eyes. Let's face it: he was pretending to work.

What can be say? It's Friday afternoon. Who really wants to be here at the Detroit Police Station looking into minor acts of crime? Not Gavin. Not even Captain Fowler. It has been a slow week anyway, and just about every single detective and lieutenant was ready to leave.

Something interrupted Gavin's trance, causing him to glance from his screen. The sound of dress shoes tapping against the concrete flooring was growing louder and louder, until finally its source appeared from behind a wall.

Gavin's eyes widened at the sight of the person - thing - that approached his desk.

"Detective Reed, I assume?"

Gavin scoffed at the android standing before him. "Brainless plastic prick, I assume?" He shot back with a sarcastic edge to his voice.

Unfazed, the android continued, "My name is Colin. I've been assigned as your partner in all cases involving androids". He stuck out a hand for Gavin to shake, but retracted after a few seconds of silence.

" Uh, no. I'm good. You can leave. Door's that way", Gavin replied, pointing towards the front entrance of the building.

Colin squinted at him and said coldly, "I know where the door is, Detective. How else would I have entered the building?"

At that, Gavin's head snapped up. His eyes were a blaze of fury, clearly ticked off at being sassed by an android. He removed his legs from the desk and stood, intending to intimidate the android, but was taken aback when he realized that Colin was several inches taller than him. He didn't let his fear show as he said, "Listen here, you worthless hunk of metal! I'm not going to allow an android to be my partner, and certainly not one who thinks he's gonna sass me! Get away from my desk, or things are gonna get ugly!"

Colin raised an eyebrow but kept a very straight, serious face as he was being yelled at. To Gavin's irritation, nothing seemed to be shaking him.

"I'm going to leave, but you're coming with me. To Captain Fowler's office. You two can work this out in there, yes?" Colin said, chillingly calm for someone who just faced the wrath of Gavin Reed.

Shocked, Gavin watched as Colin made his way to the glass office at the end of the room, not bothering to check if Gavin followed. He realized that everyone in the office was watching the scene unfold, and decided that his only choice was to follow Colin. He walked, head held high, to Captain Fowler's office. The man seemed to be expecting this exact scenario to be taking place, as he sat calmly with his hands folded on the desktop. Colin was already in there, standing dutifully to the side with his hands behind his back and a blank stare.

"Reed. Sit down", said the Captain.

Gavin reluctantly obliged.

"Let's get one thing straight: you're gonna listen to what I'm about to tell you and keep your trap shut. Or else there's gonna be consequences. Am I clear?" Asked Fowler.

Gavin nodded with a scowl.

"This", he said, pointing to Colin, "is your new partner. State of the art prototype android, RK900. He's even better than Connor, and has been guaranteed to never become a deviant".

Looking back at Colin, Gavin noticed for the first time how similar he and Connor looked. Except for a height difference, new uniform, and cold blue eyes instead of brown ones. He supposed that he didn't notice at first because Connor had been gone for several months, disappearing after he went deviant and never returning to the station.

" Now whether you like it or not, you've gotta work with him. I better not come into work one day to hear that he had to be replaced due to mysterious circumstances, you get what I'm saying? Now leave. Start doing some actual work for once".

With a huff, Gavin rise from his seat and stormed out of the office towards his own desk. Colin nodded to Fowler and said, "Captain". Fowler glanced up at him and shooed him out.

Colin approached Gavin's desk once more and said, "Is there a spare desk I could work at?"

" Yea. It's in the dumpster, why don't you go hop in and take a look? "

"You're not helping yourself by being sarcastic. All I want is a place to do my work, it doesn't even have to be near you".

"I don't know, okay?! There might be a desk on the other side of the office or something, just find one and leave me alone!"

"Duly noted, Detective. At least one of us will be working".

" Why, you son of -" Gavin started, shooting up to deliver a punch to the android. He was stopped mid-swing by Colin's hand, which was opened up all the way to block the punch.

"I wouldn't attempt such things. You'll notice I'm a good deal faster than you, Detective".

Gavin lowered his hand, seething with rage. "I don't care what Fowler says - I'll gladly shoot you, even if it means I get in trouble for it".

" That's unfortunate. Perhaps one day you'll appreciate having a partner who can always take a bullet for you". At that, Colin turned and left Gavin standing there. He managed to find an empty desk and immediately began reading case files.

It was almost time to go home for the day. Gavin decided to just leave right then, and he was gathering his things when Captain Fowler emerged from his office and yelled, "Reed! Colin! Got a case for ya!"

And so it begins.
