That night was the first time in a long time we had everyone together. Everyone was joking and having fun for once which was a good change. We ate together, played some cards, and watched Tv together just like old times. By ten Darry hinted it was time for everyone to start heading to bed after all it was a school night. Two bit, Steve, and Johnny all said bye walking out the door together. I couldn't shake the smile that was plastered on my face all evening, it was like I needed to show everyone how happy I was. Maybe things are back to our normal lives, nothing will change and this baby will grow up just how we all did. Minus the rough patches just the nice, smooth parts like tonight. Dal and I could be a little family all together. Dally could just maybe..maybe..fall in love with the baby. My brain was dancing with all these pleasant thoughts of the soon to be future before Soda abruptly cut in.
"Aren't we happy?" Soda laughed at me pinching my cheek.
"Oh says you, your like addicted to it."
"Shh Darry doesn't know." He smiled while I began to giggle.
"Darry! Soda said he's addicted to drugs!" Pony hollered from the kitchen. You could just hear Darry pause from what Ponyboy just said.
"Sodapop!" Dar yelled from his bedroom stomping towards us.
"Lil shits done it now." Dallas chuckled behind us from the couch. He's right, there's things you say to Darry but drugs is no one of them. He already thinks alcohol and smokes are bad enough but drugs are worse.
"Man Pony shoulda said you were drag racing again." I whispered to Soda nudging his arm.
"Yeah about that." He replied rubbing his neck. Before I could answer Darry's voice was in front of us.
"Soda what is he talking about? What are you addicted too? Did Dallas give it to you? Max? Tim?"
"The drug called happiness?.." Soda innocently smiled at Darry who looked at him like he was crazy. However Pony started laughing hard in the kitchen causing Dally to let out a laugh and I tried to contain mine too.
"Seriously, jeez you two are terrible." He said fighting back his smile before turning around walking back to his room. As soon as I heard the door click shut my head shot towards Soda.
"What the hell do you mean, you racing again?" I sneered at him.
"Ugh er I-" He nervously wiped off sweat from his forehead.
"Hey kid might be a good time to get to bed." Dally said getting up from the couch and put his hand on Pony's shoulder guiding him. His brown eyes flashed back and met mine as I nodded in appreciation.
"Sar please don't tell no one. Please?" He pleaded staring into my eyes. I could see the desperation within them.
"You said you stopped, you told Darry that you stopped. It's dangerous I can't let you get away with that." I replied in an annoyed tone. He gave use his word that he'd stop after the trouble he got into way back. Soda agreed that the racing life was bad news, good money but trouble. Steve and Soda use to build cars for racing with the old parts left at DX. They'd sell the cars or take turns racing them and bet on the other to earn twice the profit in one race. However after awhile Steve realized how amazing Soda was at driving. They would go every Friday night at eleven down to Shepard's street and race against others who'd come. When we found out of course we were mad but it wasn't like he was getting hurt until one night Two bit came to the house all bloody. He gave Darry and I a heart attack to say the least. Two said Steve and Soda came up with this genius plan that maybe Soda was being 'too good' at driving and people might think he's cheating. So they decided that Soda would lose a couple races here and there just to balance it out. Well that didn't go over with another gang. See they were profiting on Soda winning all the time and when he lost well so did they like big time cash. To make things worse they over heard them talking about how they threw the race and you can guess how angry they were. That gang roughed those two up pretty well and it woulda been deadly if Two bit and Dally didn't decide to go to that specific race. This was when Dally was relatively new to town so no one knew exactly what his character was and that night he made a statement. Two said he remembers just telling this new kid 'Do whatever it takes for the gang' and he gave a smirk than bomb. Dallas had the other gang beating on him away from the boys. They got him pretty good but he broke some bones and egos on them that night. After that whole situation both Soda and Steve told everyone they would cut off ties completely to racing. And that was that, nothing has been talked about it again until now.
"You're kidding right?" Soda chuckled.
"No I'm dead serious why you laughing? Cuz I'll tell Dar right now!" I threatened him but he let out a huff and rolled his eyes.
"I keep all your dark and dirty secrets, that's what twins do. A bond stronger than blood. Shall I go tell Darry yours? Cuz I am sure he won't pay a lick of attention to me after he hears yours." I gulped not knowing how serious Soda was being right this moment. "Yeah see ain't so tuff now sissy. So let's go tell Darry. Oh let's see...How about how you still get dizzy? Or that you and Two used to shoplift together? That you would fight for money behind the drive in every Wednesday? Or best of all cuz he'd really love this one, that I came home and caught you about to sleep with Joe." My stomach flipped at the last one. I know, I know it was wrong Joe was Darry's best friend and I'm his little sister but it just happened. He was dangerous and I found it appealing. I don't know what else to say, it felt right. Besides it stopped after Soda came because I was so scared that he'd tell Darry and we'd both be dead. Joe stopped and nothing happened just a make out session with minimal clothing on. Soda swore he'd never bring it up again but now that I think about it he might of just said that cuz Joe was intimidating.
"Soda you know that never went anywhere's." I whispered keeping my gazed at the floor.
"Well there you have it! Keep it between us or everything comes out." Soda spat at me. I don't know what happened next but something that was probably one of my most darkest secrets resurfaced in my mind. At that point tears began to fall and deep down I knew Soda was thinking the same thing. "And yes he'd have to know about you and your faze with standing on the tracks while the train was coming."
"Y-You take th-that ba-ck. It w-was a l-life tim-me ago." I shuttered looking up at my brother who was also crying with regret spread across his face.
"I-I didn't mean-" Soda started but a sudden creak of the floor boards caused both our heads to spin to the direction it came from. Dallas stood there mouth hung open, before either one of us could say anything he shut it and coldly glared at me while he walked out the house.
No. No. No. Oh man, nobody was suppose to find out. Only person who knows is Soda and he spilled. God how stupid is Soda right now? How stupid am I for not letting Soda live his dumb life of racing and shit. I might have just lost Dally again and I just got him back. My relationship with Dally is going to officially have reached maximum capacity of secrets and heartache. Hot tears flowed down my cheeks just thinking about everything that just happened.
"I-I do-not c-care anym-more about-t y-your act-tions j-just stay-y out-ta m-mine. P-Pregnant wo-men sh-shouldn't h-have thi-s st-ress." I stuttered at Soda and ran out the door to find Dallas.
The cool night air nipped at my bare arms despite it being mid June it was windy. Tears continued falling down my face as I walked down the sidewalk going wherever my feet were carrying me. Why is it always me running out of the house in fights? Like I'm three months pregnant for crying out loud and here I am strolling at night up town. All I know is I need to find Dally or someone to find him for me cuz this really isn't safe for me. My feet stopped suddenly, I for once focused on my surroundings and was staring directly at..Johnny?
"Johnny?" I hollered from the sidewalk to the small bonfire in the lot. There was no answer so he must be sleeping out here again, I don't know why he sleeps here when we have a couch for him. I made my way over to the old couch and shook the newspaper covered body.
"Ahh!" Johnny screamed and jumped up nearly knocking me over.
"Shh shh Johnny it's ok, it's me Sara." I softly spoke to him. Even though it was dark the glow of the fire was enough for me to see his trembling body and pale complexion.
"W-What yay doin' out here?" He said releasing a lengthy sigh of relieve.
"I'm really sorry to wake yay Johnnycakes but I ugh umm had a fight with Soda and..oh never mind my problems." I stopped myself from ranting to Johnny the one person on the world that doesn't deserve to hear about them. He's had enough of others drama for a lifetime.
"Naw it's cool, tell me. I hate to see you stress." He motioned for me to sit beside him and I gladly took a seat. I told Johnny about the event that lead up to Soda and I fighting. Then explained what Dally over heard and ran out so that's why I'm out here with him now. Johnny nodded and listened to me which I was thankful for but regretted telling him.
"Shoot I shoulda never told you that Johnny, I'd say I'm sorry again but I might end up pissing you off." We both laugh. "Anyways reason why I woke you is cuz there's a open bed at the house tonight. Overheard you and Pony talkin' about your test tomorrow so I want you to sleep and have breakfast. Ok? I know it's late but just go all of them will still be up waiting for me so could you just go back and tell 'em I'll be fine and don't fret. Could yay do that for me?" I asked a very hesitant Johnny.
"I don't like you running around at night Sara."
"I'm not, I think I'll go to Bucks see if Dals there and if not I'll just sleep there for tonight." I lied to him which I felt guilty but I couldn't tell him that I was going to find him tonight no matter what. He'd worry and if he was worried than the boys would worry.
"Ok but promise you'll be careful." Johnny agreed while we both stood up off the couch.
"I'm always." I winked at him before turning to start walking but a hand caught my arm.
"Just take this please? And call tomorrow just so I know you're ok." Johnny held out his switch for me to take.
"Ok I will, thanks and please don't tell them where I am...I don't want them to come get me I just told you so you'd be able to tell them I'm safe." I whispered taking the switch and putting it into my pocket. He nodded walked off in the opposite direction of me to the house. I didn't waste any time before I too started walking to Bucks place.
I made my way to the bar and sat down waiting for Buck to come over after he was done serving his other costumers. My eyes wandered around staring at all the people and what was going on to pass the time. There wasn't very many people here despite the pool games going on in the back room, there was a couple of ladies dancing by the jukebox in the corner and men drunk at the bar beside me. Man I'd kill for a drink right about now or a smoke to take the edge off but nope can't do that. So I continued watching everyone, after awhile I swore I saw Two bit making out with some chick but someone broke my focus.
"Hey Sara, what you want to drink?" Buck asked from behind the counter than he quickly slapped his palm to his forehead. "Duh? You're knocked up sorry kid. How's that going?"
"Well not the best at the moment, Dal overheard something and ran out. I just can-" A lump in my throat cut me off as I let a tear fall from my eye.
"Hey, hey it'll be ok." He cooed rubbing my arm. "Before you ask I don't know and if you want I can get someone to check for you cuz you know how he gets."
"Thanks but I'm fine I think I saw Two over there and I'll get him too. I'll need someone to not be scared of me and stop me from hurting him if that is the case." Buck nodded his head before leaving me and going back to serving the already drunk people here. I just turned when someone with a strong smell of beer jumped in front of me.
"Eh! Hot mama." A drunk Two yelled in my face smiling from ear to ear. He fumbled a bit and he almost spilled his drink on me. "That was close coulda been the death of me." He let out a chuckle readjusting his grip on the bottle while I rolled my eyes.
"Can you do me a favour?" He nodded rapidly. "Could you go to Dally's room and see if he's there. Soda and I got into a fight and Dal heard things he wasn't suppose to hear. So could you?" Two bits eyebrow went up like how it always does and I could tell he wasn't giving in. "I'll buy you a drink." I concluded hoping it would be the deal breaker for him. Two bit let out a groan of annoyance before grabbing my hand leading me to the bottom of the staircase.
"I swear the death of me." He mumbled before climbing the stairs. I waited for what seemed like an eternity before he started back down the stairs. Please, please, please he's here alone. For once just let my life work out..just once. I held my breathe and crossed my fingers.
"Dal ain't there so pay up." I let a big gust of air out feeling some relief but than pain again. I still didn't know where Dal was which caused me to worry however I forced a smile towards Two.
"Thanks bud, here's some cash have fun." I slipped Two a dollar and trotted to the door to leave. As I stepped out the door I heard Two bit holler.
"See yay later gator!"
I smiled to myself as I walked down the road debating where to go next. Dallas could be anywhere's right now, the Dingo, Tim's, driving around, literally anywhere's in this dumb town. How I'm I suppose to find him now? My emotions once again over came my brain and I broke down crying again. Maybe I should go back to Bucks where I know Dally is bound to come, where it's safe, and warm instead of out here on the street. After a quick break down I collected myself and rounded a corner just to bump into something hard.
"Ow, get out of my way." I growled at whatever I hit really not in the mood to be delayed. Wow I was literally just crying now I'm back to my mad self.
"Ouch Honey. Little thing like you should be sweet not bite." I looked up and was face to face with a blonde Soc. Before I could reach Johnny's blade in my back pocket he grabbed my wrists tightly.
"Man look at her how scared she is now." A different masculine voice added from behind the Soc. I followed the sound looking past him and saw that I walked right into a group of Socs that were chatting beside their fancy red mustang.
"Ain't so tough now Sweets." The blonde one smirked looking me up and down. They group began to laugh and comment like 'she's sexy scared' or 'awe babe's shaking maybe we should warm her up'. I gulped realizing I can't run and fight because I'd end up taking a beating. Even though I can handle it I doubt the baby could so my only choice was to shut up and be tough.
"Not your Sweets handsome." I spat glaring daggers into his eyes. To my dismay he pulled me close to him, so close that our bodies were touching. One of his hands was at the back of my neck and the other was on my ass squeezing it.
"On the contrary Sweets, you are mine for now." He whispered into my ear which sent shivers down my back. I knew what he was going to do, but I fought the urge to run, to escape. "Get your hand of my ass!" I screamed in his face as a last resort to try get someone driving by attention even if no one was around it gave me ease knowing I at least tried. Ok ok that's not really trying not to get raped but I can't lose this kid so I will put up little fight. His face remained unchanged as his lips crashed roughly on mine. Next thing I heard was whistling from his friends and I was dropped on the hood of the car with a thud.
"How about we continue this indoors?" He muttered while he sucked on my neck and rubbed against me. I made myself give a hum instead of nodding or speaking because I didn't trust myself to say what he wanted to hear. The blonde Soc pulled me off the hood and I didn't even have a chance to move when all the sudden a new hand grabbed my waist pushing me to the side.
"Hey watch it Grease don't be interrupting." I seen the blonde Soc hiss at a big shadowy figure. The street lamp light half the figure which you could clearly see was a guy in leather but one hand was full of tattoos.
"Don't talk to me that way kiddo, Imma break your necks." The figure threatened the group, that I could now see was about six Socs.
"Larry that's.." A Soc whispered but the figure lunged forward grabbing the first two by the shirts. The figure caused a lot of shouts and grunts from the group. I thought of slowly creeping off except I was glued watching the fight. This figure knocked out half of them and practically threw one into the windshield in like seconds of him being here. The Blonde Soc flipped open a blade earning a chuckle from mystery man. In a blink of an eye the rest of them were so hurt they laid lifeless on the sidewalk. Everything was silent except for the fast breathe of the man and my sharp breathing myself shocked at what just happened. He slowly came over placing his hands on my arms facing me to him.
"Short stuff yay hurt?" He questioned and I finally seen who it was saving me. It was Joe. My heart started to speed up, not because I was nervous but scared. I was scared that with my luck Dallas would come to find Joe with me after what he heard. "Chill just breathe Sara. It's alright."
"No it's not. You don't get it I gotta go." I tried to get out of his grasp but he didn't budge.
"Not until you tell me who or what is the reason your out here all alone. Does Darry know your out wandering the streets?" Joe sternly demanded, despite this I once again tried to push him away but this time he got angry and I had a flash back of Dally.
"Damnit stop!" He yelled at me but I started to cry. Joe pulled me into a hug still not letting go. "I'm sorry I yelled. Just tell me, I'm sorry Sara." We stood there for awhile until I stopped crying enough to speak clearly.
"Didn't know you were still in town.." I mumbled not lifting my head from his chest.
"I stayed with Max and I was deciding if I should move here and by the looks of it I should."
"If I tell you everything that lead up to this do you promise not to kill anyone? And most importantly me?" I asked wiping my nose with my hand and looking up to meet his eyes.
"I can't promise anything." He replied pushing my hair off my wet face from crying.
"Ok but it's long and your going to need to sit down for this." Joe rolled his eyes at me like I didn't believe he could take it but I know for a fact he couldn't. We started to  walk down the street until we found a bench. I was still wrapped around him hugging him knowing that when I tell some parts he'd waste no time going to beat up Dallas. Therefore if I was attached he couldn't go far.
"Do you remember when you came to the house and after all that we ended up all going to the hospital where I gave you Annie back? Well I think you know this but I fainted there."
"Yeah Darrel told me after about it and how mad he was at you guys." Joe answered and lit a weed puffing out smoke.
"Well that day I found out I was pregna-"
"You're what! Oh when I get my hands on that kid." He clenched his fists in rage.
"Ok now this isn't going to work unless you cap you emotions and shove 'em back in." I spit at him while he just said whatever and continued smoking. "Anyways so Dal and I had a fight never mind everyone else fighting and he left me. But after I talked to Mrs.Mathew it got better and everyone was semi ok with it. But than some bad guys from Dally's New York past came to the house and tried to kill him and me." I could feel his body tense at my words but he stayed silent. "I got help and I might add I stabbed two guys just saying. I was alright minor injuries because Dallas fought to the death against them and he looked dead from how bad he was beat but again we moved past it but than..than the next night the boys forgot me at work." I shivered at the memory of that night, Joe must've seen and he started rubbing my back. "Shepard drove me home late because I was stupid and kept waiting but he drove past and I didn't want to get jumped. Right I'm pregnant I had to be smarter than that so I let him. Well I got home and Dal had a look of a wild bull in his eyes, that's how mad he was. He thought I was cheating with Tim and it was Tim's baby so I slapped him. H-He grabbed my arms and wouldn't believe me so I was forced to tell the man I love he was my first time. Joe it was embarrassing." I cried. "I kicked him out and he wasn't back for like a month and I really hated it because I don't know where he was plus he was still banged up from that fight with his old pals. Than bomb he comes and writes this sweet note which if very unlike him but I made him leave again so I had to chase him again. We talked and he did change he did I swear so we made up. It was all good, the gang, everything was so good. We had fun than earlier tonight Soda and I had a fight because he said he was still racing. I said I would tell Darry but than he said if I did he'd snitch too. And you know some stuff I did like shoplifting, fighting for cash, and what he catch us doing before you left."
"Yeah I remember but he knows nothing happened so why-" I cut him off by shushing him.
"I ain't done. Than he said what only he knows and I think you had suspicions of how I liked to stand on the tracks. Don't ask me why I don't know, I just wanted to feel that feeling of nothingness. You know how hard it was for everyone after Mom and Dad died so I just wanted to forget a moment. That's all I swear but Dally overheard this all and he ran out so here I am. I can't lose him, I went to Bucks to make sure he wasn't there cuz last time he cheated way back but I needed to make sure. He wasn't there so I was determined to find him but I regretted it. That's when I changed my mind because I'm smarter than this right. All I wanted was to find him instead stupid Socs and the dumb thing is I was ready to let them have me. I was I made a decision that if I want this kid to live I'd have to let the Socs do what they wanted. So there is everything that's happened and why I need to go because with my luck at this time Dal would come and see us together. And I cried when you held me from leaving because it reminded me of Dally." I sniffed and tears ran down my face.
"Seems like you chase him more than he does to get his girl." I punched his arm at that comment and he chuckled. "Come on I'm taking you home."
"No please no. If I mean anything to you please." I pleaded to him as he let out a groan.
"Fine, back to my place but I'll need you to do something for me than." I nodded as he picked me up and carried me down the street.
