The next morning was rough..to say the least. It wasn't the worst hangover I've had but not having one in awhile sure sucks. I forgot how punishing alcohol can be. All morning I moved in slow motion, I showered, ate, and got ready slow. Everyone went to Darry's for breakfast, plus Dal and I needed to go since the twins were there. I love my kids but they were so loud. Darry gave me aspirin before I went to lie on the couch. Soon enough it was time to go since Dally was apparently a contestant and Dusty was going to give us those seats behind the chutes.
"You sure you don't want Nancy and I to keep 'em during the rodeo?" Darry asked pulling me to the side of the living room.
"No it's ok, I got this. Besides they had fun yesterday, except for the last minute when Dally was being Dally." I shrugged him off getting the twins together.
"Well I know y'all aren't getting along, I know how both you act so let me know." He gave me his serious look, I rolled my eyes grabbing the kids. He knows how we act, what does that even mean?
We walked to the car and started driving. I know Dally and I are iffy but I won't be seeing him all day. Even if I was I couldn't care less, I just want to watch the rodeo.
"Can you refrain from punching anyone today?" Dally rolled his head as he pulled into the dirt parking lot.
"Don't give me a reason." He said putting the car in park and getting out.
"I never do." I mumbled to myself following him and Jordan into the rodeo grounds. Dusty was waiting just like last time but this time an older gentleman was with him. The man was tall, silver haired, and all dressed up.
"Winston you're late." The man lectured Dally who looked like he really didn't care.
"You only paying me to fill slots so it's not a three hour event." Dal snarled back at the man who wasn't that thrilled.
"Go get your ass over to he chutes to grab gear." The man pointed and Dally handed Jordan to me.
"Relax Mark, I've done this before." Dal replied as Mark hit him over the head with his clipboard he was holding before following him to the chutes.
"Let me help you." Dusty politely stated grabbing both the twins. We walked our route we did last time. Going to see the bulls, horses, and the calves. The kids really enjoyed petting the calves like I do, both were giggling as Dusty was playing with the calves. Before I knew it the rodeo was getting started so we had to find our seats. Time just flew by whenever Dusty was around, there was never enough time for hanging with him. We followed the crowd until we branched off to behind the chutes. All the barrel racers would make comments or wave at Dusty, and I realized I've never asked him about his life. Does he have a girlfriend, siblings?
"Dusty?" I asked stalling him from having to leave. "I've never asked about you, like I mean do you have a girl?"
"Had one but I broke up with her." He rubbed the back of his neck looking at the ground.
"Well obviously she wasn't good enough for Dusty Williams." I smiled at him.
"I guess so, she's a barrel racer. Real prissy thing, so whenever I signed up for smaller events like this she'd get mad and not enter. Few weeks ago came to surprise her at her event and caught her cheating."
"I'm real sorry, but see she wasn't good enough." Dusty straighten up and collected himself before changing the subject.
"I'll be in saddle, bareback, and bulls. I-I don't know if your boyfriend told yay but he's in bulls. Better watch got some ranking bulls here, might be good runs." Dusty said assisting me on the bleachers. A girls squeal of excitement rippled through the air, both of us turned to see Charlie flirting with some, barrel racers. Charlie's bright eyes spotted us instantly forgetting about the girls and began to stroll our way.
"Lord help me..." Dusty muttered turning back to me. "I'll try see you between if not tomorrow." I nodded watching him quickly pace up to Charlie grabbing his arm dragging him away.
The twins were content watching all the action involved in the rodeo performances. Once it got hot I had to move under in the shade so the babies didn't over heat. Soda and some blonde came up to visit with the three of us. This distraction allowed me to slip to the bathroom and go grab some food. All of us watched Dusty on the saddle and bareback, he did pretty well on saddle but Charlie did best on bareback. Even though there's still one more day, I think Charlie is definitely winning first in bareback. Finally it was time for the bulls, I was so excited I moved back into the scorching sun closer to the chutes and riders. Dusty was out first only getting 86 which I thought was unfair since his bull wasn't as good but not that bad for a re run. He climbed over the chutes and slid on the fence over, that's how close this bleacher was to the chutes. You could see in his eyes that he was still on his adrenaline high from his eight seconds.
"That's Dallas." He leaned over and whispered to me when the next rider was released. I was confused since they didn't announce his name as Dallas.
"No they said Dale."
"Mark buys fillers, like Dallas, and puts them three or four times. So Dallas is Dallas but also today Dale, and Kurt." Dusty said as the scores were announced. Dally's real name was announce a few after than other riders went.
"Now folks we have a special treat to end off this fine day. Kurt McNelly has drawn a rare sight." The rodeo announcer broadcasted to the crowd and everyone cheered.
"Oh no.." Dusty covered his mouth looking at me.
"What? Dally's fine he's done this before." I waved Dusty's concern away but he still was worried.
"Sara that is the ranking bull, I mean some top riders can't stay on or not get injured." That's when I began to worry too. Dallas ain't no cowboy or bull rider, he can stay on regular ones but not professionally bred and trained bucking bulls. My heart was pounding as they opened that gate, this bull was good. It did everything right but those eight seconds went slow motion. I could see exactly where Dally went wrong as he lost his balance falling to the side. It would of been too much to ask for him to fall straight off onto his ass,  but no his hand was stuck. I was horrified just sitting trying to watch the two bull fighters, which were probably some random men off the street help Dally out. His hand still wouldn't come free and I shared a glance with Dusty. He stared at me than almost instantly jumped over the fence and ran to help unwrap Dals hand. Dusty was the one to get Dally free, both of them kind of exhaled simultaneously when they reached the fence. Dallas stood tall walking out of the arena away from peoples eyes while Dusty followed behind but I ran down to Soda.
"I think Dals hurt, I can take the twins." I told him hurriedly since I wanted to check on Dally and didn't expect him to babysit while impressing a girl.
"Go see him I'll take 'em to Darry." He calmly instructed me and I rushed to the chutes. I know that I shouldn't be worried since he independently walked out of the arena but I had this feeling. Plus I know that riders never show pain to the audience, it's just a rule for the show. Dally was sitting on the ground as a few riders and an ambulance person crowded him. I pushed my way through but someone grabbed my wrist turning me around.
"Sara, relax take a breath." Dusty pulled me to the side as I tried to fight him every step.
"Let me see him, I can see he's ok now let me go." I gave Dusty a cold look.
"I'm sorry but that medical person there is going to reset Dallas's shoulder and hip. He's going to scream I can guarantee it." Dusty didn't budge his hand on my wrist, a moment later a yelp followed by cussing came from the group. I've never heard Dally do something like that before, so I knew he was in pain. I let a few tears roll down my cheeks from hearing his pain and discomfort. Dusty pulled me into a hug as I watched them out Dal into an ambulance.
"He'll be fine right?" I mumbled into Dusty's shirt.
"I think so plus Mark is going with him, and he makes sure we get the best." He stated before I heard Mark yelling for them to hurry it up.
"Think it's just a dislocation?" I asked whipping my eyes.
"I'll give it to yay straight miss, others who have gotten dragged for long periods of time like Dallas did look ten times worse after. Except he's doing good, either he lucked out or it's all internal."
"Well let's get going to the hospital." I said walking off towards Dally's car, we both got in and I drove to the hospital. Once inside no one would tell us anything, since Dally was brought in under Kurt McNelly and not Dallas Winston. I phoned Darry saying what happened and where everyone was. I was relieved to hear Soda and his broad brought the twins home just know, he also said he'll be coming soon after getting kids settled with the boys. The call was quick and I went back to sit beside Dusty in the waiting room. Dusty was talking to some guys all guessing different scenarios of what happened to him. Since no one was especially close with Dally they all cleared out but wanted to be kept in the loop, one said the rodeo has to go on even if people get hurt. I was zoned out when I heard Charlie talking.
"Why's she here? Dusty you shouldn't drag her to places like this."
"I didn't, now Charlie would yay just drop it." Dusty shot back at the cheeky cowboy.
"I'm just saying that she might want to be somewheres else with somebody else." Charlie cockily replied sitting down on the right of me. "Besides Kurt ain't from around here, he's a no good filler."
"He's better than you on bulls." I muttered at him, Dusty chuckled.
"She's got you there."
"How come y'all care so much? He's either alive or dead by know from bleeding." Charlie huffed, I stood up trying to put my toughest and coldest face on.
"Kurt isn't his real name, it's Dallas Winston. He ain't no body 'round here, don't let anyone catch yah taking trash...especially him or you'll be in the bed right beside him." I hissed leaning towards him, Charlie stiffened up like he was trying to lean away from me.
"She's his girlfriend Charlie." Dusty finished for me as I kept staring Charlie down for dramatic effect.
"I'm goin' for a smoke." I turned and walked out sitting on a bench outside the main entrance to the hospital. I smoked four weeds by the time Darry's siren like voice came from over head. He looked down at me than my small pile of buds.
"Haven't heard anything I'm guessing?" Dar sat beside me wrapping an arm around my shoulder.
"Nope, since the guy who enter Dal in the rodeo changed his name to Kurt only he can get information." I inhaled a new weed.
"Sorry I took so long, had to make dinner since I didn't trust Soda too." We both laughed, last time Soda cooked he nearly burnt the house down. Darry and I just sat watching people enter and leave the hospital. It was peaceful, it helped me relax a bit.
"Hey miss ya might want to come back in Marks out." I jumped up smothering my smoke and followed Charlie inside with Darry trying to keep up. Mark was standing with Dusty in the waiting area.
"He's fine, they just got him into a room. Winston completely ripped his shoulder from his socket, broke his hand, and has a lot of bruised muscles and tendons. They took him for surgery when we got here but he has to go again to reattach everything tomorrow." The silver haired man was still explaining more on what the Doctors said, except he slipped up and told us the room number. I wasted no time before rushing to that room. A nurse stopped me saying only family can be here and I made up this lie that I was 'Kurt's wife' so she let me in.
"You just lied." Dally faintly spoke as I run to so bedside, his eyes were still shut. His arm was all black and blue, casted on the hand and wrapped at the shoulder.
"I've waited five god damn hours to see you Mr.McNelly so hush up." He smirked as I ran my fingers over his cheek.
"Mrs.McNelly huh?" Dally asked still groggy from his little surgery.
"I had to make something up." I said as Mark and Dusty walked in.
"How'd yay get in with out them seeing you?" Dusty whispered. "I had to wait until the nurses left."
"Simple, be a quick liar. I'm Kurt's wife, so if the got a problem just say your his brother or something." I shrugged my shoulders turning back to Dally.
"No wonder y'all get along, your just like him." Mark commented sitting in the corner chair as Dusty hollered at the nurses to let, who I'm assuming Darry, in since he's 'Kurts' brother.
"She's nothing like me." Even though Dal was not feeling to good he was still able to harshly speak.
"I'd say that to Charlie, he's scared of miss?" Mark asked me since he didn't know my real name.
"Sara Curtis." I replied as Dally chuckled hearing I scared someone. Suddenly a nurse came, everyone got on edge not wanting to be kicked out.
"Sorry but Mr.McNelly is getting rushed up since our OR opened. Leave your name at number at the desk since this surgery will most likely take all night." She said wheeling Dally out fast and disappearing through swinging doors. Darry went to the desk and gave the house phone. Mark hinted to Dusty they should leave, Dusty was hesitant.
"Is it alright if I have to go." He said, I nodded.
"It's fine, I guess I'll see you tomorrow."
"I'll come by in the morning. See yay Sara." Dusty waved and walked down the hall towards the entrance doors. I didn't want to leave, it felt wrong.
"I gave those nurses the house number and the promised to call no matter the time to say when he's out of surgery." Darry put his hand on my shoulder.
"You can leave but I have to stay." I gave Darry puppy eyes.
"Both of you bull headed." Dar exhaled shaking his head and walked over to the waiting room to sit down.
"Hardly, I just can't leave him alone." I explained plopping beside him.
"Exactly, he sat in the same spot waiting for you in this hospital."
"Well now I must return the favour, besides he'll be lonely after surgery." Darry rolled his eyes at me.
"What time is it?" As I said that we both looked around for a clock.
"Like eleven thirty ish." Dar stated as I let out a big yawn.
"Than why am I so tired." My hands wiped my eyes as I curled up on to the chair leaning on my brother.
"Well you were hungover this morning, plus have been going to bed early with the twins."
"I guess, does Johnny know. Man we shoulda brought Johnny." I once again yawned.
"He does but I didn't want him here, you know how much Dally means to him. I didn't know if Dallas was alive so I didn't want Johnny to come." Darry looked down at me.
"We should call and tell them, they are most likely waiting by the phone." He nodded getting up and to the pay phone. Darry talked for a long time probably had to talk to every single one of them. Soon he was smiling to himself, I knew Nancy was on the other side. She's the only one able to make him smile without trying to crack a joke or doing something stupid. I'll have to talk to Darry, he needs to marry her and not let us hold him back. Nancy is good for him, he's less stressed, more laid back..for Darry..and he has more fun. Darry was still on the phone when I shut my eyes, I fidgeted on these god awful seats to get comfy when I finally did. I passed right out, slept solid for the majority of my slumber.
