"He's alive," Doctor Marin said, getting straight to the point of his words, "but his brain has been severely damaged. It doesn't look like too much has been effected. He still has his motor skills and his ability to speak, but the area where his memories are stored has been injured. In time he will heal, but at the moment he is in a coma, and we aren't completely sure when it is he'll wake up."
Sam swallowed thickly and slowly sat down in one of the chairs, Jack standing close to his side and holding his shoulder as Rita covered her face and leaned into Dylan's arms. Kitty sniffled and rubbed at her eyes as she looked up at the doctor.
"Will it be a few days?"
Dr. Marin gave her a small smile and crouched down to see her better, "He survived something very incredible. That means he's strong. It might take more than a few days, but I have no doubt he will wake up eventually. His mind was not injured to the point of death, but he did lose a lot of blood, and is no doubt tired," he looked up at Rita, "I warn you. If and when he wakes up, his memory may be less than precise."
Rita shook her head, "I just want him to wake up. Anything more can be figured out later."
Marin nodded and stood up, slipping his hands into the pockets of his white lab coat, "He's currently in a single bed room in the IC area of the hospital, and most likely will remain there until the blow to his head is healed. There is a couch there, as well as chairs, so if you want to stay with him, you and your family can."
Rita rubbed at her eyes and nodded, "Thank you, thank you so much," she said quietly, an arm wrapped around Kitty's shoulders.
"Only one," Marin informed, "but I suppose I could bend the rules a bit for Miss Katherine," he smiled down at the girl, whose eyes got wide in awe.
"Really?" she asked in disbelief, "I-I can stay the night with him?"
"Yes, ma'am," Marin chuckled, "You and your mother or brother. Seeing as this is a special case, I don't see any reason not to allow two," he looked back and forth, "Don't tell the other doctor's though. They might get jealous such pretty ladies are under my watchful eye," Kitty giggled, and Rita gave him a grateful smile as he turned, "I'll have a nurse show you to his room. Right now I have a few things to attend to. You can decide amongst yourselves who will stay tonight."
Rita nodded as he left, and hugged Kitty tightly, smiling down at her, "You want to stay, right sweetie?"
Kitty nodded furiously, "Yea. Um, can I also stay on school nights?"
Rita laughed weakly, "We'll decide that later. Dylan-."
"You stay, mom," Dylan said, brushing back her wispy red hair, "I'll come tomorrow. I have to look after Rowan so she doesn't burn the house down."
"Excuse me, but you're not mister star chef, either!" Rowan huffed, and Dylan chuckled, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her closer.
"No, but your hormones are so fiery who knows when they'll flare up. I need to be there with a fire extinguisher just in case."
Rowan scoffed and folded her arms, turning her head away, "Hmph."
Rita laughed and kissed Rowan's cheek before doing the same with Dylan, who gave her a soft kiss back before turning Rowan away, "See you tomorrow, mom."
"You should call the kids and give them an update," Rita called after them, and Rowan waved back.
"Plan to! Night mom!"
Kitty turned as Rita walked up to the nurse at the reception desk and stepped slowly towards where Sam was sitting, leaning against his knees as Jack ran his fingers through his hair.
