The ambush and the reward

The cook had made stew, with the rabbits me and Tristan hunted. All the soldiers were eating when a single red feathered arrow hit a swordsman in the back. We all turned, I had a terrible feeling. I was hidden by a mound of earth. Keeping low I crawled towards the pile of weapons. I seized as many as I could and gave them out to the soldiers nearer to the back. I drew an arrow from my quiver and aimed it at a man that had emerged from the trees. I shot him, as perfectly as I did when I shot the deer. Then they all ran forwards. We all took our weapons and put them into action.

We were fighting well, but I saw something that shrunk my heart. A red feathered arrow hit Tristan. I let out a squeal. I ran towards him and kneeled down next to him. His eyes were wide, he was pale and he was breathing quickly. There was a red feathered arrow sunk into his chest. I grasped the arrow and twisted my hand round it and pulled it out. He groaned in pain "Sorry" I whispered. A smile appeared on his face, "You screamed didn't you?" he asked me "When I got shot" I hit him in the arm "Yes!" I tried to frown but I smiled "I thought you were going to die" he looked around "We're in the middle of a battle" he said with sudden realisation "Should we go before we get killed" I nodded frantically. We stood up and legged it. Tristan skidded to his knees, but we were out of sight. "Thank you Arianne" I stared at him and smiled. He caressed my cheek, he leant in and we kissed. I realised I did have feelings for him. I pulled away gently, "You know you still have a hole in you from when I pulled out the arrow" he chuckled "I know, I can feel it" he said grinning. Then I spotted something, a man outside the kings tent, "Wait here" I ordered Tristan "Like I can really go anywhere" he smirked. I narrowed my eyes at the man, I drew an arrow from my quiver, aimed it and shot it. It hit the man in the side. I prepared an arrow and entered the tent. The king had a sword to his throat, I shot the man with the sword. "Thank you Arianne Roe" the king nodded. I nodded in response. I came out of the tent and saw that the fight was over.

Many were injured and two were dead. Tristan had a bandage wrapped round where the arrow had hit and he was healing quickly. For saving his life, the king had granted me one wish. "I want all of us to go and see our families" the king nodded "For how long?" I sighed "One week" "It shall be done" he nodded "You all leave tomorrow, you must go through the forest and be silent". "Thank you" I muttered, he put his hand on my shoulder, "Your father was a great man" he smiled "he would've been proud of you" I nodded. Then we all hurried off to prepare our horses. This was going to be a long ride.
