Chapter Two
School was different without Shawn there. In science, our science teacher didn't laugh. Shawn was the one who always made him laugh. In third hour P.E., our team lost at dodgeball. Shawn was the one who was really good at dodgeball.
As I was heading to lunch, I heard, or really thought, a voice. It was Shawn's! I whirled around, but I saw no one. All I saw was a reflection in the window that oversees the front lawn of the school. There was another reflection, but I could not make it out. I stepped closer. What I saw made me think I was crazy. it was Shawn! I whirled around again to look at him, but he wasn't there. I turned back to the window to find that Shawn had disappeared.
I headed to lunch, wondering the whole time if I should be checked into a mental hospital. If I was to be put in one, I wanted the one south of my house. They had weekly golf cart races.
I paid for my lunch and sat down at an empty table. As I ate in silence, I heard a voice ask me, "Is this spot saved for someone?"
I looked up, and saw the girl of my dreams.
Samantha Roberts. She had auburn hair that sparkled in the sunlight. Her sea-blue eyes captivated me every time I looked at them. She had perfect teeth, and an even more perfect smile. She was nice, and she was the slightest bit taller than me, but I still liked her.
"Umm, no, no its not taken. Please sit down." I managed to speak without losing all of my dignity.
"Thank you very much." She said, smiling at me. "So, I've been noticing you for a little while. I usually don't fall for nerds that often." (Did I mention I'm a little bit of a nerd?)
"So, are you doing anything friday night?" She asked.
I could not believe it! Samantha was asking me out. "No, I'm free friday night." I replied, trying not to express the immense joy I had inside.
"Well, we can go for a picnic in the park." She half told, half asked me.
"Sure, we can do that. I'll pack the food." I replied.
"Thanks. You are a great guy." She said. She got up and walked away. Needless to say, I was floating on air the rest of the day.

It was thursday when I finally was drawn out of my good mood. I hit my head on the top bunk again. I fell over our pet cat on my way up the stairs, and then it got a whole lot worse.
"Um, Tony?" My mom was at the table, worried look on her face.
"What?!" I snapped. I immediatly apologized.
"It's ok." She said. "What I wanted to tell you is another kid has gone missing.
"Who?" I asked, a little worried.
"Samantha Roberts." My mom said apologetically.
