Karl Kjer, a celebrated entomologist with numerous publications in the field, studied music as an undergraduate student at Concordia College. He was a member of the Anoka Marching Tornados, an award-winning marching band that went on to play at Jimmy Carter's inauguration. After college he went on to direct the Coon Rapids Minnesota Marching Band, and he still plays the trombone to this day.
