I was looking for Nick. Which honestly made me feel deja vu. I sighed, wondering if this was what it’s going to be like all the time between us. One day we’re all buddy-buddy and then the next he goes all AWOL on me. It’s a very tiring pattern, honestly.

“Do you see him?” I asked Darcie. She craned her neck, looking over the crowd, which made me realize that she was the same height as me. Which meant that I already knew the answer to my question.

“Nopes. Why are you looking for him anyways? Didn’t you guys hand over your project already?” she turned to look at me. I could see Cade from the corner of my eye making a cutting motion with her hands to her neck, a signal for Darcie to not ask. I immediately felt a tumult of emotions crash down on me. Upset, confused, mad. If you put all of these emotions into one facial expression, you end up with...

“You look constipated.” Karissa said, joining our little circle. I banged my head against the lockers. This was so....MASHED POTATO! Nick and I were all smiles and jokes earlier, and then when we handed over the project he stopped talking to me. And then he started to avoid me like the plague. It’s like he shuts me out. And it’s so fudging frustrating.

“Girls! Not helping.” Cade reprimanded, standing between me and the lockers. She motioned for them to move closer. Darcie wrapped an arm around my shoulders and leaned into me, which was pretty comforting.

“Why? What’s the matter with Rae?” she asked, curiousity lacing her every word.

“Nick’s been avoiding me. And I dunno why. It’s crazy, I know, because we’re not even in a relationship but... I felt like we had something. Auuuuugh.” I said, frustrated. Karissa rubbed my back, trying to comfort me.

“I get it. You two zinged, didn’t ya?” Darcie said, her thumb and forefinger stroking Herbert, her imaginary beard. Yes people, Darcie has an imaginary beard named Herbert. She named him/her/it that because (1) she was a feminist, hence the ‘Her’, and (2) because she wasn’t sure of the gender, hence ‘Bert’ which was a rather boyish name. I didn’t know you had to name your beard. I didn’t even know beards had genders. Or that imaginary ones had to be treated like real ones.

“Hey laaaaaadies.” A voice said from behind us, snapping me out of my, should I say, beardly musings. *wink* *wink*

“What’s up Tanner?” Cade asked as I turned around to find the blondie, standing there, hands in his pockets and that genuine smile plastered on his face. Tanner always looked like a model. He was like Zac Efron and Alex Pettyfer merged into one. I always wondered how I never fell for him. Probably because I grew up with him. And the fact that I knew all his deepest, darkest secrets. Like that time in third grade when he ate all the glue because of a dare. Or this other time when- well, you guys get the picture.

“Well, I was actually wondering if you guys wanted to go to a party. Like, my party to be exact. What do you say?” he rubbed the back of his neck, a sign that he was nervous. Why was he nervous? And why was he glancing at Karissa? Wait, was he blushing? What was going on here? Before I could voice any of these questions, Darcie jumped up. Like, literally jumped. Like a frog. Or a rabbit. Or...or... whatever else in this world jumps.

“Sure! We’d love to go!” Darcie answered, clapping her hands like a child who finally found Waldo. Tanner’s eyes lit up, his smile growing bigger as he beamed at us.
