We start walking towards the treehouse feeling leaves crunch under our feet. "They're already falling," I say as we make it to the treehouse.
He nods walking up the latter me close behind. He sits down and I sit beside him. "I don't want to go!" He says in the same whiny voice he had in the dream.
I smile at him. "I don't want to either. I don't want to leave you," I said resting my head on his shoulder. Everything is the same as the dream until he wraps me in a side hug instead.
"What was the promise you had to make with your father?" He asks curiously.
"That I start liking princesses instead of princes and guys in general," I state.
He lets go of me and turn to face me. "Virgil listen to me, I don't care what your father said you cannot change who you are if you are homosexual you can't change that," He says looking into my eyes.
I smile at him. "I guess you're right just don't tell Father that."
He smiles back. "Wouldn't think of it. Also, why couldn't I hang around you because of that it's not like you are smitten with me," Roman says chuckling.
I plaster on a fake smile. "Yeah, he just thinks I'm smitten with every attractive male now since I am homosexual."
He grins. "You think I'm attractive?" I roll my eyes and shake my head.
"No, I don't think your attractive my father assumes I think that though," I say getting up and climbing down the treehouse.
Roman follows behind. "Where are you going?"
"On an adventure," I say walking towards the river.
That was the last day I ever spent time with Roman. I was seventeen now and my mother had died giving birth to my younger brother Sage when I was thirteen. "Virgil!" Sage says running into my room.
I jump at the sudden boom of my door flying back and hitting my wall. "Yes, Sage?" I ask putting my paints away.
He grabs my hand and pulls me towards the door. "Dad has another princess meeting for you this evening."
I turn around and groan. "Another?" Sage nods his head and walks towards me burying his head into my neck.
He takes a deep breath. "I know you like males." I pull away and look at him shocked and scared. "I see you paying more attention to the princes than the princesses."
I go and pull out my dinner jacket and trousers. I go into the washroom and change washing up. "Virgil?" I look over at Sage. "How come you cannot marry a prince?"
I sigh. "Sit down," I say moving to my bed. He sits beside me and listens. "When I was twelve I knew a man who was seventeen and he was my best friend," I begin looking over at Sage seeing him looking towards me focused on every word I said. "And I soon grew feeling for this man, strong feelings. I asked Mother every night before I drifted to sleep why I could not love this man and her words were, 'You know why Virgil. It's in the rules. We mustn't marry any commoners and we mustn't marry anyone of the same sex.' This broke my heart because I really loved this man and he got away."
Sage wraps his arms around me. "I am sorry brother, what was his name?"
I smile at him warmly hugging him back. "Roman," I said sighing at the thought of him. I smile at my thoughts for a few moments and break the hug with Sage. "We mustn't be late let's go," I say getting up and heading to the dining hall.
"Ah and here is my son Virgil," Father says introducing me as I walk down the stairs. I slow down my pace trying to look at everyone but instead looking towards the ground. Once I get to my father he whispers in my ear. "I have a surprise for you." When he says that a knight about twenty-two walks in.
I look at Father in confusion since I know every knight in Fathers court. "Who's that?" I ask looking back at the handsome man. He was about 6' 2", he has black hair and blue eyes, he was built like a soldier. I swear I've seen those eyes before but I don't know where. They were kind caring eyes.
He speaks before Father can answer. "Hello, Prince Virgil and King Angoro it is a pleasure to be working with you once again." His voice was very familiar but I still couldn't place why he was so familiar.
"Pleasure is all ours Roman," Father says I look over to Father then back to Roman. It's only been five years but he's changed so much.
Sage pips up unusual for these types of meetings. "Virgil?" I look over to him questionably. "That's...him?"
I look at Roman he seems to be holding back a smile. "Yes. That's the man that disappeared from my life completely five years ago even though he promised to always be by my side and protect me no matter what." I say venom dripping from every word. "Sorry, Princess but I feel you should come back another day," I say storming off towards my room.
