chapter v - "congratulations you just ruined the moment"
1 hour later - 12:42 pm
I sit outside on Chloe's porch waiting for my older brother Justin to come and pick me up. Chloe is inside making lemonade which leaves me alone with my thoughts. Lucky for me I have a lot to think about. Most importantly, Noah hasn't talked to me since the nerf war. Since he kissed me.
The front door opens behind me and I expect Chloe to sit next to me with two glasses of lemonade. But it isn't Chloe. It's Noah. He sits next to me and takes a deep breath before he says, "Kammie, I know everything that happened probably seemed a little rushed but I really do like you. I think that you're unique and special and just an all around good person and I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get ice cream sometime. Like, a date."
"Really?" I ask taken aback. I had expected him to say something very different. He hadn't spoken to me after the nerf war ended even though he congratulated almost everyone else on our team. I thought he was going to tell me that the kiss was just a mistake. But instead he said he liked me.
"Yeah, I was thinking maybe tomorrow. I have to leave for filming in three days."
"Okay. Yeah. Tomorrow sounds good," I say with a smile.
We sit in comfortable silence for a few seconds before I break it.
"Why me?" I blurt out.
"What do you mean?"
"Why do you like me? I'm so plain and boring and, well, simple."
He laughs. "Says the girl who wears Wonder Woman shorts to sleep."
"Congratulations, you just ruined the moment," I say laughing.
I hear the front door open and Chloe says, "Hey I got lemonade," she doesn't even finish her sentence when she sees Noah and me sitting together laughing. "Noah, what are you doing?"
"Uh, just, uh," he stutters.
"Talking about the nerf war," I say interrupting him.
"Okay," she says even though I can tell she doesn't believe us.
Noah stands up and leaves allowing Chloe to sit next to me. She hands me a glass of lemonade and says, "What were you really talking about?"
"Noah was talking about how he's leaving for filming in three days and we were just joking around," I tell Chloe sipping my lemonade nonchalantly. I feel bad about lying to her. She is my best friend but friends don't date friend's brothers. I can't tell her about what Noah and I were really talking about. I don't want to screw anything up with her or Noah.
Chloe looks ready to ask me more questions but my brother pulls into the driveway before she has the chance. "That's my brother," I say standing up and grabbing my backpack. I hug Chloe and then grab my sleeping bag and pillow and climb into the car.
