THE LAMENT OF HECUBA

This is more of a performance poem, as it speeds up and is said to a beat - ideally in one breath to convey the desperation, speed and exhilaration of Hector's final moments - but the short lines should hopefully convey this. If you're really feeling dedicated, give it a go yourself!

I saw him die,
That child of mine,
At the Scaean gate,
So ringed in fire.
With only deaf Greek ears to hear
the bravest of the Trojans' fears.

Glint of iron, dust of sand,
felled by spear in his own land.
Legs kicked, dust flew.
High Olympus surely knew
The scales are tipped,
Apollo flees,
Spear takes him down to greevèd knees.
A scream, a roar,
my child no more,
his eyes closed forevermore,
That were so ringed in fire.
