Death Note. (L x Reader x Light)

Chapter Three: The Tension Rises.

L sits at the laptop, listening to the update from the police while you sit there eating pizza. "C'mon L, you gotta eat." You sigh, taking his pizza to him.

"Yeah, soon." He shushes you so he can listen. The police inform L that the times of death occur between the hours of 4pm and 2am, holidays and weekends being the only exception.

"That information is very relevant for us. This suggests that given the times of death our suspect could very well be a student." Your thoughts are spoken aloud and L nods.

"Yes, the assumption by M would explain such a thing." He mutters. "Based on the fact that Kira's only killing criminals, we can assume that Kira is driven by a very idealistic notion of justice. It may even be that he aspires to be some kind of god like figure.We're dealing with an individual who has a very childlike concept of right and wrong." When L talks all smart like this, it makes you smile. He's always been a genius.

"Of course, this is only a speculation at this point but I recommend that you re-examine any assumptions you've made that our student could in fact be a student. You must examine every possibility." You reassure the police force.

"I am sure that is going to be the fastest route to finding Kira. Please, continue with your report." L shrugs. Once the police make a few more reports, L makes a few other demands and then hangs up the call.

He sits on the sofa next to you, putting his head on your lap. L only ever did this when something was bothering him.

"What's up, Pikachu?" You chuckle.

"Just tired." He mumbles. You feed him a slice of pizza and he hums in appreciation. "Thanks for looking out for me, it makes a nice change." A genuine smile graces his features.

"L. What's wrong? You sounds as if you're... Trying to say something." You mutter, trying to not sound as concerned as you are. He sounds as if he's saying goodbye, as if he can't win this case.

He looks at you, chuckling. "Stop worrying about me, will you?"

"Hell no. If I don't worry about my best friend... Well what kind of best friend would I be?" You smile at him.

Grabbing your wallet, phone and keys, you walk out of the door, locking it behind you. L isn't here, so you knock on his door. No answer. Checking your phone, you notice you have a message off of L. He has to set up the task force with the remaining handful of police willing to do the job so you're to go to school alone. You've been at school for about two weeks and your investigation is only getting more interesting, as well as governments becoming too frightened of Kira, so they called off the investigation, however you and L aren't satisfied and are going to continue it. This means you're going to meet some of the police face to face. A huge risk, but the Kira case requires a few risks.

Once you arrive at school, your phone rings with it's Monochrome Kiss ringtone. It's L.

"Yo, Ryuzaki! Where are you?"

"Hello, M. I'm with the task force. You see, I want you to do me a little favour. I want you to hang out with suspect #1 and tell him that you're M. I know, it's dangerous and quite frankly I wish I was the one who was doing it. I don't like you being in trouble, but you're the best at defending yourself." Your eyes widen at his words. Is he insane?! Light will surely kill you as well as Misa! "Thing is, he's your friend, you suit this job best. If he doesn't do anything rash, I want you to invite him to the task force. Say no if you don't want to, I'd totally understand." You can tell he's smirking, he's basically daring you to do it.

[A/N: Since no one seemed to understand this part later, L is telling you to tell Light who you are (M). It's to provoke him, a part of his plan, and a part of the story.]
