Chapter 1
Please Vote!Betty POV:
I'm Betty Cooper, just your average girl. I live on the Northside with my brother Joaquin, he's a South Side Serpent. I use to live with my mother, she wasn't really happy that Joaquin is a Serpent.
I use to live with my dad and two other siblings, Polly and Chic. Once my parents got their divorce my dad moved to Australia with them. I was about 10 when it happened. It didn't effect me to much, my father never really liked me, neither did Polly or Chic. They always left me and Joaquin out, that's probably why me and him are so close.
My mother was and still is a wicked lady. She use to abuse me, most of the time it was only a couple punch's, Joaquin always managed to get me out of her grip before she did any real damage.
My mum, Alice, was always strict on me, she never really cared about the others grades apart from mine. She told me every morning that I was a disappointment and that I was worthless. Every time she said that Joaquin would reassure me that I'm amazing the way I am. If it wasn't for him I would definitely have self esteem issues. He is the best big brother
Polly and Chic were a little weird. They kept to themselves a lot and made no effort to connect with me and Joaquin. The only times I saw them laugh were when my mum was hurting me. Joaquin didn't like them either, he says he could see a type of darkness in them.
When I was 12 I was walking home from school one day. I opened the door and no one was home. It wasn't that unusual as Alice spent most of her time at the Register, the local newspaper, since only me and Joaquin lived with her. She tried to avoid us at all possible costs, she would even sleep at hotels instead of coming home. It was around 7pm and only me and Joaquin were home. I thought to myself maybe she was staying at a hotel. I don't waste anymore of my time thinking about that sorry excuse for a mum. I hate calling her a mum, she did a terrible job. Joaquin and myself raised each other.
I woke up the next morning to no one yelling at me, no one telling me I'm a disappointment. What a relief. I walk out to the mail box and find a letter that's addressed to me and Joaquin. I walk inside and into the kitchen where Joaquin was. I walk up to him and pass him the letter, he gives me a puzzled look. He slowly opens the letter, reading it aloud.
Dear Joaquin and Betty.
I am leaving and never coming back. I don't care what you do because I don't consider you my children.
Good bye.
From Alice. We both look up to each other in shock and confusion. Why would she leave now? And what are me and Joaquin going to do?
Betty: Joe, what are we going to do? I ask him worriedly. He's 2 years older then me.
Joaquin: Betts, we've managed for the past couple years that she's barley been here, we'll be fine. He says whilst embracing me in a hugHe tells me to get ready and not to tell people about our living situation. I run up to my room and get changed out of my pyjamas. I put on a crop top and high waisted jeans. I grab my bag and walk downstairs. I hug Joaquin goodbye and walk out the door. I close the door and as I began to walk to school I hear someone call my name. Archie. I stop in my tracks and wait for him to catch up with me.
Me and Archie have been best friends ever since we were four, we're even next door neighbours. We both walk to school and talk about our weekends, I try to avoid the topic of my mother. Luckily Archie isn't that smart so he didn't notice anything.
We arrive at school and am greeted by our other two best friends, Veronica and Kevin. Kevin and Veronica both run up to me and give me a big hug, they like to do that every morning. I laugh at them.
The bell soon goes and we all walk to class together since we all have math. We all take a seat next to each other and began the lesson. The teacher starts talking about finance, tax and so much more. I zoned out as I had already learned this stuff when I was younger due to my mother. I begin to think, how will life be without Alice? I was happy that she was finally gone and wouldn't continue to insult me but me and Joaquin are to young to live alone. I'm 16 and he's 18 years old. I know me and Joaquin will be able to work it out though, we always do.
