Betty POV:
The lesson ends and I found myself sitting in a booth at Pop's waiting for my father to arrive.
I was on my phone scrolling through Instagram when I heard the bell ring, meaning someone had entered the small diner. I turn my attention from my phone to the door that would change my life. In walked the same Serpent that promised me answers, Jackson.
He spots me and gives me a small, soft smile. He walks over to me and we exchange brief hellos and other typical small chat topics. It wasn't awkward though, it felt like we're connecting on some level.
Jackson: ask me anything you want. He says.
Betty: how did you know my full name yesterday, did you know of me earlier? I ask him.Jackson: let's start from the beginning. Me and your mother were supposed to be a fling, nothing more. After not seeing her for about 6 months, I saw her one day where she told me she was pregnant and it was my child. I tried reasoning with her as to why she should let me be able to see you or even hold you. It was useless. I stopped trying until you were about 1 years old. I went to your house and tried to get her to let me spent some time with you. I remember that day like it was yesterday. He says with a sad chuckle.
Jackson: you and your brother were outside, running around together. You had shoulder length, golden hair. Your smile was big and your checks were red from all the laughing you had been doing. Your clothes were covered in grass and mud as it had been raining the previous night. You had a purple dress that I have no doubt was destroyed. Your hair was still perfect no matter how many times you fell over. You looked beautiful. He says.
I could see that he was really hurt that he never had a chance to be involved in my life. I didn't expect anything like this to have happened. Maybe I got the wrong side of things, because the way he's pouring out these words seem as if he's never been able to say them before.
Betty: you remembered all of this? I asked him in astonishment. I would never have thought he cared this much.
Jackson: of course I did. You're my little girl. I always wanted to be a part of your life. I never stopped thinking about you. He says. He grabs my hands and holds them lightly. It looked like he had been holding in all this pain for so long that it was almost therapeutic for him to let all this go.
Betty: why did you stop then? I ask slightly saddened.
Jackson: every time I went over she just got angrier, until one day she said she would expose some dodgy things the Serpents had done, including me.
He says the last part silently. As if I hear one bad thing about him I'll leave.
Jackson: so in order to protect the Serpents I had to stop. I nod my head.
We then start talking about our lives. It felt like he was so desperate to be a part of my life again, to catch up on all the years he missed. I really want him to stay in my life.
It started getting later and we had spoken about every possible topic. Although I'm sure we could have thought of more. I'm glad I could spend this time with my father.
He is a kind-hearted, scary looking person. When I found out he was my dad I was a little intimidated. He has a six pack and his body is filled with more enormous muscles that are ten times the size of my face. He was also covered in tattoos. He's just a softie in the end.
Jackson: it's been good to finally meet you. He says with a shy smile.
Betty: yeah, it has. I say with a smile.
Jackson: I know it's a lot to ask, but I still want to be a part of your life. If you'll let me. He says not able to meet my eyes.
Betty: I would like that. I say making us both smile.
