Marina stood outside the entrance to Detective Ralston's office.
She wore a long, black wig with blonde streaks.
The heavy foundation on her face served to darken her complexion.
A large, black mole lay strikingly on her cheeks, deliberately set as a point to remember.
Approaching the receptionist's desk, Marina was greeted by  bright red lips over mustard coloured teeth.
"May I see Mr. Ralston please?" Marina drawled.
"Do you have an appointment?" asked Rose Red lips
"Yes, I called today, my name is Martha Hacksaw."
"Oh right, I remember, please have a seat. Mr. Ralston will be out shortly."
Marina alias Martha Hacksaw, sat uncomfortably on the too deep, cushioned chair.
Practising her feigned posture was causing turmoil on her backbone.
Detective Ralston was hired by Geraldo a week after baby Serena's disappearance.
At one point, he claimed to have made headway with the investigations, but quickly changed his tune when questioned by Marina.
Marina looked up as the door to Mr.
Ralston's office opened.
"Good evening Miss Hacksaw."
Mr. Ralston was a stocky man in his middle fifties.
He had blue eyes, white hair and a paternal, dependable air about him
Leading her into his office, he closed the door.
Gesturing to a seat, he slid behind his desk.
As he moved to sit, loud voices penetrated the serenity of the office.
Confused Mr. Ralston glanced in that direction.
"You had better see what is happening." Marina stated wide eyed in her best Martha Hackshaw's voice.
"I'll be right back." Mr. Ralston grunted.
As soon as he left the office, Marina got to work.
Sliding swiftly behind the desk, she was thankful as she saw the key on the metal drawer.
Moving quickly she unlocked the drawer and thumbed through the alphabetically arranged files.
There it was. Geraldo and Marina Hartland.
Grabbing the folder, she placed it in her bag, turned the key and resumed her position on the chair a mere second before Mr. Ralston re entered his office.
Feigning shock as she looked at her watch, Marina stood abruptly, claiming to be late for another appointment.
"Okay Mar....tha".he replied
Peering at her intently over his horn rimmed glasses.
"Have we met? You seem familiar."
Marina fought back her nervousness and replied quickly in a cockneyed voice.."no no no." as she swept unceremoniously through the door.
Once outside in the streets, she turned towards the alley which separated Mr. Ralston's office from the tea shop.
Her decoy stood waiting impatiently.
Marina quickly retrieved two bills from her purse and handed it over to the eager participant, who scampered away in search of her next fix.
