You're sitting on your grandmother's back porch, drinking coffee. She offers you a cigarette. She's the only one in your family who knew you smoked (because she was the only one in your family who wouldn't have killed you if she found out) and the only one in your family who would let you smoke in their presence. She smokes at least a pack a day anyway.
You take the cigarette and smoke as she talks. She talks a lot, but that's just as well, because you like to listen more than you like to talk.
"Hey," she says after a second of silence. "How's that boy? The cute one with the weird name?"
"Sirius or Remus?"
"Sirius is the one you liked, right?"
"Well, if you tell my parents I'm gonna deny it, but we're dating. I was thinking he'd be a crappy boyfriend, but he's actually great."
She gives you an amused smile. "So, you're meaning to tell me that your dad doesn't know?"
"That's exactly what I'm telling you." You laugh.
"When did this happen?"
"Couple months back."
"How many months back?"
"Ten." You mumble, hoping she won't hear and will just go with it.
"Ten?" She accidentally knocks her ashes onto the porch instead of into the ashtray. "And I'm just now hearing about this? And your dad hasn't heard about this?"
"Well, I mean, I've been at school, so..."
"You write letters."
"Yes ma'am. Sorry. I just didn't expect it to last long enough to bother anyone with."
That evening, the doorbell rings. Your grandmother's out back smoking, so you get up to get the door. It must have been somebody walking, because the driveway goes to the back yard. Maybe it was the neighbor.
It isn't the neighbor, it's Sirius.
You open the door. "Hey."
He curves his lips into a smile. "Hey, babe."
"How'd you know I was here?" You step back to let him in.
"You weren't at your house so I figured I'd try here." He kisses your cheek as he steps in.
"Everything okay?"
"Fine, fine. Where's your grandma?"
"Out back smoking."
"Cool. Think I can bum a cigarette?"
"Probably. I think you shouldn't smoke though."
"You smell like smoke, babe." He points out.
"Because her smoke's blowing on me, not because I smoke."
"Right, right." He sounds like he doesn't really believe you, but leaves it at that. "Can I get a kiss?"
"I dunno. Can you?"
"May I get a kiss?"
"I'd like that."
He kisses you rather roughly for the situation. "Let's go out tonight."
"Sure." You brush his hair behind his ear. "You smell like whiskey."
He shrugs and gives you a smirk. "My dad drinks."
"It doesn't work that way, honey."
"It works however I say it works. The world is at my command." He grins.
You lead the way to the back porch. Your grandmother was about to come back inside, but since you and Sirius came, she stays outside longer. She and Sirius shit talk half of each of their relatives and several other people they knew, even though they didn't know any of the same people. You listen with amusement.
When you and Sirius leave that night after dinner, you ask him where he was wanting to go.
"I don't care." He says as he checks his hair in the mirror.
"You're the one who wanted to go out."
"I just wanna spend time with you."
"You do?"
"Yeah." He leans over and kisses your cheek. "Very much so."
"Where do you wanna go?"
"Somewhere we can stay a while."
You drive to a 24/7 cafe. You both get coffees and go to sit in a corner booth in the back corner.
"I was thinking more of a bar but this works too." He smiles, dropping his arm around your shoulders.
"You said you didn't care where we went."
"I don't. But you should know by now not to sit in the dark back corner of the restaurant with me. You really should've picked somewhere less private." He turns your head to kiss you.
"Get off."
He huffs, but stops kissing you. "Fine. Party pooper."
"I know." You smile.
"Come on. I wanna get all my kisses in before you dump me."
"I'm dumping you? Thanks for informing me."
"Well, not soon, preferably, but I know you will. Face it, babe. I'm not your type."
"You kind of are."
"Yeah, but I'm not the type you need."
You raise your eyebrows. Now he was telling you what you need? "Who are you to decide that, Black?"
"I'm not deciding. I know what you want, and I'm not it. You need someone who'll be a productive member of society. I'm most likely gonna be a bum, and we both know it. You wanna settle down and be responsible. I'm not ready for that. You want a family. If I knocked anyone up, I'd lose my shit. I'm not what you need."
"Do me a favor? Let me decide what I want or need. If I wanna stay with you, I'll bloody well be with you. Stop being a dick. Time to go home."
"No." He grabs your hand as you start to stand. "No. Not yet. Please. I'm sorry. I thought it'd help you be able to break up with me if you knew I was resigned to it. I didn't mean to piss you off. I'm not ready to go home. Please."
You sit back down. "It won't help, Sirius. Go ahead and brace yourself, because I'm gonna cry when it happens. I know you hate feelings. But it's gonna happen. Resign yourself to that."
"Shit. Can't you just send me an owl or something?"
"No."
He laughs, but doesn't sound like he means it. "Okay, babe."
You sigh. "I know we aren't gonna last. But I don't want it to end anytime soon, okay? We haven't even finished school."
"We have a year left."
"It doesn't have to be right after."
"Yeah, but you should be preparing for that, not dealing with my bullshit."
"I like dealing with your bullshit." You smile.
"You wouldn't if you heard it all." He smiles, putting his arm back around you and reaching for his cup with his other hand.
"Well, what is it all?"
He takes a sip of his coffee. "You know what? Let's go to France this summer. It'll be fun."
"Where at in France?"
"Paris. The city of love." He winks.
"Sirius, oh my Lord." You smile. "Okay. Let's go to Paris. But I'm not having sex with you. Wouldn't wanna get knocked up and have you lose it."
"Fuck."
You laugh and pat his cheek. "You'll be okay."
"No I won't."
"Yes you will."
"No I won't."
"I'll spill your coffee in your lap and then you'll have a burnt dick. Then you won't."
He laughs. "Okay, fine. I'll survive."
"Good."
You sit in silence for a while. You're the one who breaks it. "Sirius."
"Yeah?" He tightens his arm around you and turns his face to kiss your temple.
"I love you."
His eyes widen and he stiffly withdraws his arm from around you, clearing his throat. "Okay. Well. That was the L word. Don't wanna get too comfortable with that one. I'm gonna go now. I oughta get home before Mother misses me too much. Okay. Well. I'll see you at school. Um. I... okay. Bye."
He disapparates, but thankfully no one sees. You wait a minute to see if he'll come back, but he doesn't. You'd expected him to panic a little, but you hadn't expected that.
You go back to your house. Your parents are asleep and the doors are locked. You're digging your keys out of your bag when Sirius apparates to your front porch.
"Y/N?" He says uncertainly.
You turn around to face him, unfazed. "Hey. You okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah. I'm sorry."
"It's okay." You smile a bit. "No worries."
"Nobody's said that to me since I was, like, eleven. And it makes me uncomfortable, so please don't say it again."
"Okay. I'm sorry, love."
He makes a noise.
"Sorry, sorry. I'm sorry."
"Would you marry me if I asked?"
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Don't ask. I'd say yes."
"I want to marry you." He blurts out. "I really do."
You sigh. "Sirius, please. Stop with your games, okay? Please. Just stop."
"It's not a game, Y/N. I really wanna fucking marry you."
Tears spring to your eyes, but you don't know why. "Stop, Sirius. You ran away when I said I loved you. You don't wanna get married."
"Well, not now. But I do. I really do. There's nobody else I'd rather spend the rest of my life with."
"I said to stop, Sirius. This is complete bullshit and you know it. I don't want you using me for amusement. So please. Just stop."
"I do wanna marry you."
"You said it yourself, Sirius. You're not what I need. I need somebody who's ready to settle down and be a husband."
"I can do that, babe." He takes your hands in his. "I don't understand why you're upset. Why are you crying?"
"You can't do that, Sirius. You don't want to."
"I do with you."
"And if I got pregnant? Then what? You'd run? No, Sirius. Please just drop your shit." You try to pull your hands away.
He holds onto your hands, even though he usually lets you go when you pull away, especially when you're mad. "No. I wouldn't. I swear."
"Drop it, okay? You can stay here if you don't wanna go home, if that's why you came back. I'm not upset about what happened. But I don't want your games. Drop it."
"I love you."
"No you don't!" You laugh a high-pitched, angry laugh. "You won't even let me meet your parents, Sirius. This relationship is no more serious than any of the others you've had. Give it a rest, babe. I know your smooth-talking gets you a lot, but this is something that won't get. So drop it."
"I won't let you meet my parents because they fucking hate me and they'll hate you even more. You're a mudblood, and to make it worse, you're dating me. I don't want you to meet them. I'd rather you keep thinking I'm who you think I am instead of you figuring out I'm who they say I am. I want you to kiss me and tell me you love me. The last friendly touch I've had before today was when you said bye on the train home for break. Excuse me for wanting to keep that separate from my family. Is that what you fucking want? For me to spill my soul to you? If that's what you're gonna want, we might as well break up now because I'm never going to give you that. I just want you to hug me. Can you do that? Please do that. I want you to hug me." He's breathing hard and pacing in front of you before he's half way through talking. "And please for the love of God, stop crying. Okay?" He puts his hands on your cheeks and wipes your tears with his thumbs. "Did I make you cry? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Please stop."
You wrap your arms around his neck. "I'm sorry, Sirius. I didn't think. I was really insensitive."
"It's fine. You didn't know. Plus I'm a drama queen." He wraps his arms around you tightly, breathing heavy still.
"You're fine."
"I'm sorry I bothered you today." He whispers in your ear. "I'm sorry. I just wanted you and I was tired of being ignored or despised and I just wanted you. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me and I need you and I'm sorry, I'm really sorry."
"It's okay." You say quickly, before he can keep talking. "It's fine. It's fine. Chill, okay? It's fine."
"I know I shouldn't have bothered you and I'm sorry. I was tired of being alone and James and Peter are out of town and Remus is busy and I didn't wanna bother you but you're all I have and I'm sorry."
You're crying again. Sirius Black upset was definitely something you didn't want to see. It's heartbreaking. "It's okay. I've been wanting to see you all summer. Bother me more often."
"I'm bothering you?" He lets you go and steps back. He rubs his hands on his pants, his expression something you don't know how to describe. "I'm sorry. I'll go--"
"Please don't go." You say quickly, in case he tries to disapparate again. "Stay. Don't go. You're not bothering me."
He nods.
"Can I kiss you?"
He nods again.
You kiss him, then step away again, taking his hands in yours. "I love you. Tell me what I can do to help you."
"Help me what?" He shifts anxiously. "I'm fine. I don't need help."
"Help you calm down, for starters." You're not one to be nervous, but he's stressing you out. "What do you do to calm down?"
"Drink."
"No."
"Smoke."
"No."
"Talk to James' mom."
"Sorry."
"Give me a cigarette."
You pull a pack from your pocket and offer it to him. "I don't have a lighter."
"I'm a bloody wizard, babe."
"Oh, duh." The two of you sit down on the side of the porch, dangling your legs over, not talking.
"I do wanna stay with you, Y/N. I wanna marry you. I just don't want kids." He says after a minute, still sounding anxious.
"We can talk about this later." You put your hand on his knee. "Okay? It's fine. It's not a pressing matter. It can wait."
"If you wanna meet my parents you can. Can I have another cigarette?"
You hold out the pack to him. "I don't have to meet your parents, baby. I want you to be comfortable."
"I'm not comfortable with any of this. I don't know how to be in a relationship."
"You're doing fine."
"But I do wanna marry you."
You take his hand. "Sirius, please. We don't have to talk about marriage. Okay? We still have half a year of school left. And it's not like we'd be getting married right after school, so let's just not talk about it yet. Okay? Please."
"Okay. That's good. That's suitable to me."
You laugh. "That's suitable to you? I'm glad."
"You can meet my parents. I know you want to. Maybe over Christmas holiday. But please, baby."
"What?"
"Don't let it change your mind about me."
